One of the things that I love about coming to The Code Project (besides reading great articles :-D) is that you get input from all over the place, however, I sometimes find it hard to guess or know where people are from by just reading their post (unless it's Paul Watson with the nice logo in his sig). My suggestion is adding to the "My Settings" portion of user options the ability to allow people to show a flag beside their name in their posts (or somewhere that makes sense). So, if a person decides to show (or maybe don't even make it an option for users to reduce the overhead of including this feature) this a little icon of their nationality would appear beside their name in the post listings. I don't know how easy it would be to find such icons or even make them ... but I think it would be one of those "little things" that adds a lot to the site. Just a thought, Wally Atkins

You can just read the user's profile and hope that s/he has specified a country. The problem is that not every person specifies a country, or if they do, sometimes they just specifify the first available country out of convenience. Seriously cool idea, but where would it leave us travellers? I'd need an SA flag (home) and a UK flag (currently working) Poor Chris.... we are so demanding :-O

I think I understand the point you are trying to express: That by displaying a flag beside each person we show how far apart that most of us are from one another when this website (or the internet as a whole) brings us so close together and connected despite of our locations. If I am way off in my intrepritation please let me know ... but, I find it to be very cool that despite all of the differences we have (no just were we live) that we come together to collaborate on our thoughts and ideas and have so many different takes on things. I personally think that something like a "flag" would just help me to understand "where you're coming from". :-D If technology is something that can bring us all together ... I'm all for it!

I can always be assured of Lauren or Meg or Simon understanding where I am coming from as we come from the same culture. But we share a bond with CG and Stan and John Simmons through CP. Judging by your name you must be oriental, probably Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Stereotypes and some bias comes in because of that, but you are a CPian. I like to know from which country people come, helps to know what approach to take with them. * Though we are sometimes just as bad as we divide based on programming language

And checking peoples bio's is not the solution, it takes ages for the page to load and many people have not chosen their country properly. I found a link (using Google, of course) to a free collection of National Flags Icons[^] I'd like to submit myself for putting in some time with Photoshop to make a collection of small GIF images from these icons if this suggestion comes to be included in CP (heck, I might just make them to use on my website :-D). I'll also post this in the Suggestions Forum ... but if you could pass this along to whoever might find this as useful to including this as a feature ... Thanks in advance, Wally Atkins

All I'm talking about is something that is comparable in size to the user icons that is on left of everyone's name in their posts (approx. 166 bytes) Please don't rage against this ... I'm just trying to make a point: How about the waste of bandwidth with allowing signatures? People can include basically anything they want within this space and it's included on every post they make. Not that this is a bad thing - I enjoy seeing the creativity that others have in making their signatures - but it definitely adds a significant amount to the size of the forums. Anything feature you decide that would be nice to add to a website adds to its size and therefore will affect the bandwidth it takes to shell the content out to all of the visitors. It's a judgement call on the owners/creators of the web site on whether it is worth adding or not. I think is ... you disagree ... and that's cool. ;)
