    Maybe the recruiter simply mistook you for another Kevin, and in sending your message, you've unnecessarily closed a door to what might have been a good opportunity?  IMHO, it's prudent to count to twenty (metaphorically) before composing a reply that could be peppered with emotion. /ravi

    Oceanside to Sorrento valley is hardly a painful commute. There's even a train that goes there. It sounds like the recruiter doesn't know the area.

        I sent an email to a recruiter about a WPF position I saw on their web site. The commute would be about an hour, maybe an hour and a half, but I'm open to relocating, so it's a mute point for me. The recruiter wrote back:

        Kevin,

        I just left you a voice message to let you know that we had received your resume for the C#.NET WPF position. It’s a perm position for a company in the Sorrento Valley area, and not a contract position. It looks like you’ve moved further north (our last records were when you lived in Oceanside) and a daily commute would be painful.

        I shall share your resume with our consulting division.

        Is there someone you can recommend for this position, which will work very closely with EE’s, ME’s, and other software developers? If so, feel free to forward this job description to people you respect in this technology space.

        Attached is a copy of my bio and interview tips for your review.

        1. No voice message 2) Who said I won't take full time vs contract? 3) "a daily commute would be painful" - Isn't that for me to decide? 4) "Is there someone you can recommend for this position". So you're just blowing me off right from the start based on YOUR assumptions. 4) You're sending me tips for interviewing AFTER you decided I'm not right for the position. Go figure. All this with no phone call, based off on email. So I wrote back

        "It seems you made the assumption that I would not be willing to go to Sorrento Valley and have outright dismissed me, without even discussing it with me. Don't bother pursuing it, I'll look elsewhere."

            You're really trying hard here , artn't you?? There was not mistake, so I'm not sure where you're getting all this. Go back & re-read the OP. Most of the recruiters I deal with are very good. Excellent people. This is why I dismissed this one. The bottom of barrel in my opinion.

                Ok, cool. I actually live in Winchester, right on the Murrieta border. I work at Sony in Rancho Bernardo. Go right by ya every day. Their "records" (that always cracks me up - they have 'records' on me) are 9 years old. That's when I moved up there. And thats why this recruiter is an idiot. My resume says Winchester, she's got Oceanside - Ding! Ding! - "Hey, mabye our records are out of date and I should call him". As far as the commute, it's about 40 minutes door to door. So to hit Sorrento Valley isn't that fare of a stretch.

                  I once got a call from some recruiter kid. From the background noise it sounded like a call center. Him: "Mr. MacDermot do you have any experience in SQL Server?" Me: "Yeh my software performs transactions with a company database." Him: "Well Have you maintaned SQL Server databases?" Me: "No, but I have written several back-ends for production test software using the SQLITE ADO .NET provider." Him: "Ok just a minute." Recruiter kid thinks he put me on hold but he didn't. Over the phone: "Hey we don't need a SQLITE developer do we?...Sequel Lightweight? No we don't need one of those..." Laughter ensues among several people. "Hey I'll bet you -- yack yack yack..." More laughter at my expense and so on for a minute or two until someone realized that the phone was still off hook. Suddenly the on hold music issues from the phone. Shortly after this the kid gets back on the line trying to sound professional and says "I'm sorry Mr. MacDermot our client is looking for a slightly different skill set."

                    Wow. When I first moved to the US back in 2001, I lived in Rancho Bernardo and our office was a block from the Sony compound. I then moved to Del Mar (only a block West of the I5, but Del Mar zip code), close to Sorrento Valley and our office later moved to Mira Mesa. The commute was great because all the traffic went the opposite way. Our office is still in Mira Mesa, but I have bought a house in Eastlake - terrible commute, but I work from home a lot, so it is not too bad. Soren Madsen

                        There's no point in getting angry with someone who thinks he's doing you a favour. You should have just replied civilly, noting that you'd be happy to take a permanent position, and that you're looking to change houses anyway, so looking in the area where the job is wouldn't be a problem. That would have extended the (civil) discussion, and probably got your foot in the door. You berate him for not discussing it with you, but you're the one who terminated the discussion. Try to think as logically and cleverly when dealing with people as you do when you're sitting at your console.

                            "Stupid recruiter" - tautology. Don't companies advertise vacancies openly over there? I'd never dream of using an agency. I've heard almost nothing good, and plenty of bad, about them.

                              I've just started a new job with a 25% uplift after going via an agency - I applied, had a phone interview, a face to face interview/technical test, an offer and a written contract all within a week, so they're not all bad
