So, this thread got me thinking: http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/4334679/Goodbye.aspx[^] For those on here with pseudonyms, why do you do it? Is it out of fear, just for fun, your real name was already taken by somebody? Do you do it so that you can bad mouth people without them knowing? Are you a celebrity and you just want to be a normal 'Joe'? Are you evading the law? Is it just a reflex and you don't care if somebody finds out who you are? Are you Batman? I'm just having a hard time thinking of a scenario where you would stop coming to this site after 4 years just because someone found your true identity.

I will never use my real name. Identity and online reputation will be really important in a decade, so I prefer to have the choice to conceal my identity, which is only possible with a pseudonym. You can never know what future looks like. Look at our chocolated friend on CP, she also had to hide her online name to escape some old story. Better be anonymous right away.

My real-world name was taken years before I found this site: Paul Griffin[^] but I don't exactly hide it anyway: A Coder Interview With Paul Griffin[^] So I tried for Griffin, TheGriffin, Griff, TheGriff, etc before finally arriving at OG, which probably fits me quite well...

Why do you use your administrative name? Is it so you can Google your name to see how many results you get? Do you do it so that future employers can check out all the incredibly clever tings you post on the internet? Are you just pretending to be a real person? Are you hoping to meet new friends/spouces/businesspartners this way? Are you afraid that people will think you're weird or involved in illegal activities? Do you have an autism that makes it impossible for you to write something else than your own name whenever you see a field that is labeled with "name"? Are you a politician?

I don't know if I could take people finding out who I really am... That's why I hide my real name over there, where nobody would think to look ---> Kidding aside, though... This is one of the only sites where I use my real name... I used to try to be completely anonymous online, but since I was always using the same handle, it became easier and easier to connect the handle to my true identity. So now I have a few other handles, with different degrees of connectivity to reality, but I still assume that anything I post online will, at some point, be connected to me.

my username came from a game I used to play. As much of a habit as anything. If anybody really wanted to find me I'm sure they could, but I like keeping the average masses at bay from simply doing a name search. If I had reason to directly connect to a member here it would not bother me for my email and name to get to them, I just don't care to have it available on a simple websearch. Remember, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you :-D

Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

This is probably the closest. I use my name, because... it's my name. That's how I introduce myself to people when I meet them in person, it's how I fill out the 'Hi my name is ...' stickers, and I see no benefit in doing anything to the contrary just because I am online*. *Unless they don't allow spaces in the name. In this case I use 'krsanford'.

I don't want to be anonymous. I've written a few articles that I hope prospective employers will link to me. I am also at least somewhat careful to not post anything that I wouldn't want a prospective employer to come across. I've bit my tounge a few times because of this, and it's probably to everyone's benefit I did. Anonymity isn't a great thing in a discussion forum.

You might want to reconsider using your real name; the pseudon.. thingy is really easy to remember, and it stands out. As it stands, the "brand" Wjousts has already started to develop.

I tried using a different name once, but got banned because of it - I was trying to use "Squishy Tampon of Discomfort" in an online 1st person shooter. I followed that up with "Menstrual Psycho". That might have been the last straw...

Why do you use a pseudonym? Is it so you can say/do anything you want on the internet without consequence? Are you weird or involved in illegal activities? Do you have an autism that makes it impossible for you to write your own name whenever you see a field that is labeled with "name"? Are you a politician? Personally, I use my real name because I feel like I don't have anything to hide, and I only say things online that I would say in real life. And as others have mentioned, if I were to write an article here, I want people to know who actually wrote it.

I upvoted you, for at least provoking some contrary thoughts. Being someone who uses his real name, I felt the "urge" to defend myself and answer the questions.

Yes, but you can do that with a fabricated name more easily, as they're often more unique.

Not really, but it would make for a nice benefit. Only one out of five did any actual research by the way. Nowadays they ask for my "FB" - I don't have one, and you know what that implies..

Yes, part-time. During each election. Sometimes a bit outside of that. Thanks for keeping it complicated :-D
