So, this thread got me thinking: http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/4334679/Goodbye.aspx[^] For those on here with pseudonyms, why do you do it? Is it out of fear, just for fun, your real name was already taken by somebody? Do you do it so that you can bad mouth people without them knowing? Are you a celebrity and you just want to be a normal 'Joe'? Are you evading the law? Is it just a reflex and you don't care if somebody finds out who you are? Are you Batman? I'm just having a hard time thinking of a scenario where you would stop coming to this site after 4 years just because someone found your true identity.

my username came from a game I used to play. As much of a habit as anything. If anybody really wanted to find me I'm sure they could, but I like keeping the average masses at bay from simply doing a name search. If I had reason to directly connect to a member here it would not bother me for my email and name to get to them, I just don't care to have it available on a simple websearch. Remember, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you :-D

Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Why do you use your administrative name? Is it so you can Google your name to see how many results you get? Do you do it so that future employers can check out all the incredibly clever tings you post on the internet? Are you just pretending to be a real person? Are you hoping to meet new friends/spouces/businesspartners this way? Are you afraid that people will think you're weird or involved in illegal activities? Do you have an autism that makes it impossible for you to write something else than your own name whenever you see a field that is labeled with "name"? Are you a politician?

This is probably the closest. I use my name, because... it's my name. That's how I introduce myself to people when I meet them in person, it's how I fill out the 'Hi my name is ...' stickers, and I see no benefit in doing anything to the contrary just because I am online*. *Unless they don't allow spaces in the name. In this case I use 'krsanford'.

I don't want to be anonymous. I've written a few articles that I hope prospective employers will link to me. I am also at least somewhat careful to not post anything that I wouldn't want a prospective employer to come across. I've bit my tounge a few times because of this, and it's probably to everyone's benefit I did. Anonymity isn't a great thing in a discussion forum.

          Yes

          just for fun

          Not really

your real name was already taken by somebody?

Doubt it, but I never checked

Do you do it so that you can bad mouth people without them knowing?

          :-O

Are you a celebrity and you just want to be a normal 'Joe'?

You got me, I'm really Brad Pitt.

          Are you evading the law?

          No

Is it just a reflex and you don't care if somebody finds out who you are?

Partly, it is a reflex, but I'm not sure whether I care if somebody finds out who I am.

          Are you Batman?

Yes I did start using my real name on Stack Overflow however with the idea that it might be professional useful at some point. If I had the time and motivation to write really good articles on here, I would definitely use my real name, but as it stands, I rarely even look in the programming forums here anymore.

You might want to reconsider using your real name; the pseudon.. thingy is really easy to remember, and it stands out. As it stands, the "brand" Wjousts has already started to develop.

I tried using a different name once, but got banned because of it - I was trying to use "Squishy Tampon of Discomfort" in an online 1st person shooter. I followed that up with "Menstrual Psycho". That might have been the last straw...

Why do you use a pseudonym? Is it so you can say/do anything you want on the internet without consequence? Are you weird or involved in illegal activities? Do you have an autism that makes it impossible for you to write your own name whenever you see a field that is labeled with "name"? Are you a politician? Personally, I use my real name because I feel like I don't have anything to hide, and I only say things online that I would say in real life. And as others have mentioned, if I were to write an article here, I want people to know who actually wrote it.

I upvoted you, for at least provoking some contrary thoughts. Being someone who uses his real name, I felt the "urge" to defend myself and answer the questions.

Yes, but you can do that with a fabricated name more easily, as they're often more unique.

Not really, but it would make for a nice benefit. Only one out of five did any actual research by the way. Nowadays they ask for my "FB" - I don't have one, and you know what that implies..

Because you shouldn't put your identity out on the 'net. I'm fairly upset that Facebook wouldn't let me use Piebald Consult as my name there -- on the other hand when I've searched for my name there I found more than five hundred of me so I guess I'm fairly annonymous anyway.

I don't really understand that, either, but I have realized that members here have widely divergent goals for the site. There are a lot of people (like CDP1802, I think) who want CP to be something like Facebook for programmers. Personally, that's not my goal here. I like being able to present information in article form. I like the article posting and update wizards, I trust the site to actually hold on to what I post, and it seems well-indexed by the major search engines. I will generally not post anything here that I wouldn't write in a journal article, school or work assignment, etc., with my own name on front. My feeling is that there are better outlets for that sort of thing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and CDP1802 was a good member here. However, I do think that the people who have decided that CP is a social media site detract from our ability to be taken seriously. I would like to get some credit (in the hiring process, for example) for my work here, just like people get credit for working on open source projects. All of the personal and political junk that people post here just gets in the way of this goal, and I wonder why they can't (or won't) post such things on sites that are explicitly dedicated to that sort of thing.

I tried using a different name once, but got banned because of it - I was trying to use "Squishy Tampon of Discomfort" in an online 1st person shooter. I followed that up with "Menstrual Psycho". That might have been the last straw...

Of course for certain reasons someone who is smart and who has decided to be anonymous wouldn't tell you that it was an alias nor would they tell you why.

You do know that just because someone has a condition that leads to them being labeled insane it doesn't absolutely mean that they are stupid nor that they are incapable of formulating and carrying out complex plans?

My name is just too damned long. I have used "Nagy Vilmos" for years, when I first came to Hungary one of the guys at work called me "Big Willy" and that morphed into Nagy Vilmos. For work / business stuff I always use WilliamNW, the rest of the time it's Nagy Vilmos. Except on twitter, there I am @GinAndBacon just to be different.
