I do remember an airline asking customers for cash before... I believe that happened here in the US.... Hey, at least it wasn't a war zone (unless it landed in Detroit :laugh: ).

Good point... but why would an airline have to ask passengers for cash anyway? :doh:
Because they normally work with an agreement between the individual airline and the relevant fuel company - the company supplies fuel, and the airline pays them direct. The pilots do not have to get out a credit card and hand it over at the pump. If the country they are in is not served by a oil company they have an agreement with, then they have to pay - and generally cash or a lot of "real" credit cards because the fuel company is not going to take the pilots word of honour, not when a jumbo can hold up to 240,000 litres - that's $500,000 worth!

So they'd expect for the customers to dish out $500,000 :doh: ...if anything, they should have a contingency plan for that sort of situation. Why wouldn't they have contacts in most major airports around the world to deal with emergency landings?

Probably not - enough to get them to an airport where they can refuel properly, I suspect. They do. But there are always gaps, particularly if the airline doesn't normally stop there. Then airline head office talks to oil company head office and a deal is done. However, landing in a war zone is a different matter! :laugh: The last time this happened (IIRC) was back in 2011 when the airline company was going bust I think, and the oil company wasn't taking chances on trusting them!
