Android VS iPhone ..

Well, I've been doing some research on my own and thus far I'm leaning more towards the Android(Samsung s3) instead of waiting for the iPhone5. I'm a software engineer... Does anyone have any input ? Thoughts ? Experience ?

Android. More variety among which to choose. I have a Droid, my wife has a Samsung Stratosphere, our son has a Pantech. And the Kindle Fire has it too.

Have you looked into some of the Windows Phone 7 or the soon to be released WP8 devices? They shouldn't be overlooked, everybody I know who is running WP7 is quite impressed with it.

I considered WP, but Verizon seems to be keeping people away from it. (Only one (HTC) phone supported, and it needed to be special ordered. No plans to support the Nokia 900 (or whatever).)

I'm a big Android fan, but I must admit that iOS is still more polished, even than 4.1 Jelly Bean. That said, Android is much more open and you can find apps that do the most absurd things.
If you truly believe you need to pick a mobile phone that "says something" about your personality, don't bother. You don't have a personality. A mental illness, maybe, but not a personality. [Charlie Brooker] My Blog

I would consider any that would allow you to sync your e-mail messages between the phone and the computer... As far as I've seen in my Blackberry I can't do that if I don't have BES which is more expensive than BIS and moreover I would need an Exchange server... :((

How impressed are they that they won't be able to run Windows 8 on it ? best, Bill

Given the recent ruling against samsung you might want to consider what might be the consequences of a diminished market for that phone for you. That of course might not happen (diminished market) but it might be a consideration.
Or Samsung could get a big boost.

One thing you can't do with an iPhone - switch out the battery! I was waiting in line the other day waiting for a store to open and a teen girl was going up and down the line looking for someone with an iPhone charger as her battery ran down  Yes, there are a few Android phones that also seal the battery in (like at least one of the Motorola Razr models), but with my S2, it only takes a few seconds to pop in a new one when battery gets low...

Since the ruling, the S3 has been flying off the shelves [^]

I've not asked. But I don't understand why people feel they are entitled to OS upgrades on mobile devices, you wouldn't expect to get the next version of Windows for free on a PC, just security updates and patches.

Not sure how that follows. Historically short term sales mean nothing in the mobile market. If the devices are banned then consumer\vendors relying on that device will see a rapidly diminishing availability of markets for services (software and other add ons.)

You must have missed the third of the four paragraphs: "The city of Huizhou says it conducted its own investigation after receiving the report from China Labor Watch and found that two of the seven named individuals were adults and that the other five were between the ages of 16 and 18." (Huizhou is pronounced close enough to "Hey, Joe!" to be interesting*.)
* "Hui" is pronounced "hwey", really, but slurring is allowed

Sadly Apple have done exactly that and therefore the bar has been set a little higher in this area. I bought my iPhone with iOS 3.x and it will soon be upgraded to the latest 6.something having been through iOS 4 and 5 on the way. Although I agree with your comments the fact is its nice to get the upgrades for free as part of the infrastructure. I'm not even sure most Android phone suppliers even push security updates out but I might be wrong on that. The whole problem of the next phone is something I'm wrestling with myself at the moment and I am awfully tempted by the big Galaxy Note (II?) at the moment so that maybe I can leave my tablet at home more when I'm on the road.
