How impressed are they that they won't be able to run Windows 8 on it ? best, Bill

I've not asked. But I don't understand why people feel they are entitled to OS upgrades on mobile devices, you wouldn't expect to get the next version of Windows for free on a PC, just security updates and patches.

Or Samsung could get a big boost.

Not sure how that follows. Historically short term sales mean nothing in the mobile market. If the devices are banned then consumer\vendors relying on that device will see a rapidly diminishing availability of markets for services (software and other add ons.)

You must have missed the third of the four paragraphs: "The city of Huizhou says it conducted its own investigation after receiving the report from China Labor Watch and found that two of the seven named individuals were adults and that the other five were between the ages of 16 and 18." (Huizhou is pronounced close enough to "Hey, Joe!" to be interesting*.)

Sadly Apple have done exactly that and therefore the bar has been set a little higher in this area. I bought my iPhone with iOS 3.x and it will soon be upgraded to the latest 6.something having been through iOS 4 and 5 on the way. Although I agree with your comments the fact is its nice to get the upgrades for free as part of the infrastructure. I'm not even sure most Android phone suppliers even push security updates out but I might be wrong on that. The whole problem of the next phone is something I'm wrestling with myself at the moment and I am awfully tempted by the big Galaxy Note (II?) at the moment so that maybe I can leave my tablet at home more when I'm on the road.

One thing you can't do with an iPhone - switch out the battery! I was waiting in line the other day waiting for a store to open and a teen girl was going up and down the line looking for someone with an iPhone charger as her battery ran down  Yes, there are a few Android phones that also seal the battery in (like at least one of the Motorola Razr models), but with my S2, it only takes a few seconds to pop in a new one when battery gets low...

I'm a big Android fan, but I must admit that iOS is still more polished, even than 4.1 Jelly Bean. That said, Android is much more open and you can find apps that do the most absurd things.

Have you looked into some of the Windows Phone 7 or the soon to be released WP8 devices? They shouldn't be overlooked, everybody I know who is running WP7 is quite impressed with it.

I've been using Lumia 900 for two weeks now and I can say I am quite impressed by Windows Phone 7.5. It's very user friendly and I can get a lot of things done much faster than with Android (Sorry, I'm allergic to iPhone). The UI simply feels more natural and navigating from my several e-mail accounts is a bliss. I even have an integrated calendar that will merge my work calendar, facebook and private gmail in one view. Configuring all these accounts couldn't be easier (I first thought, nahh, it's not gonna work, can't be that easy) and in no time I had all my inboxes and calendars synced to my phone. It has a few quirks I don't like about it as a user and one as a developer. What annoyed me the most was: As a user: 1 - Can't save two cell phone numbers in a contact. If a contact has more than one cell phone number I have to move it to work or home phone, because Windows Phone does not allow more than one cell phone entry. 2 - Can't filter the contacts to only the ones that have phone numbers like we can in android. So I use only contacts of my gmail account and leave out facebook and work contacts out. As a developer: 1 - Applications can't run in the background and we have only one way to have jobs run periodically. It's by using a background worker provided by Windows phone which can only execute at a minimum 30 minute interval. This is a killer for real time tracking apps or messenger apps that run in the background. Now I know why I can't find the "I lost my phone" app. I'm hoping these will be addressed on Windows Phone 8 or as it matures a little more. Aside from that, it's a blistering fast OS. I'm looking forward for the new generation of nokia phones. I usually love them for the camera (although Lumia 900 has a crappy camera) and sturdy build.

They have but they haven't. Hear me out before you vote me a 1. Apple says they have an update for existing phones to the new OS but the problem is that all the functionality of the new OS doesn't come with the update, yet it's called a "full update" by older iPhone owners, it's just that the hardware doesn't support the functionality and so they're happy. Microsoft has decided to have a 4.8 update to give SOME of the features and functionality of WP8 to WP7 hardware owners but they're not calling it WP8. Basically it's amounts to being the same thing as what Apple does for older hardware, it's just that Microsoft is calling it what it is, an OS where you won't get all the functionality unless you buy the new hardware that supports it. In the real world it's called "marketing", Apple does the little lie (telling everyone it's the same OS but that older phones won't support all the functionality) and gets rave reviews and pats on the back, Microsoft calls a spade a spade and gets panned for it by the tech reviewers, Apple faithful and the Android supporters (who rarely, if ever, get upgrades provided by their carrier).

Well, I've been doing some research on my own and thus far I'm leaning more towards the Android(Samsung s3) instead of waiting for the iPhone5. I'm a software engineer... Does anyone have any input ? Thoughts ? Experience ?

I suspect I'm going to cop some flak over this, but it has to be said. iPhone is a smart phone for dumb people. It has to be jail broken before you can get it to a level that any self respecting tech person likes because an out of the box iPhone is essentially a castrated bull. To be fair on Apple though, it is very stable, and it suits their target market very well. It's a much more closed ecosystem than Android, and that in itself is not a bad thing, because by only allowing one method of putting applications on your phone, it makes it harder for the average user to accidentally install malware (now if only Apple monitored their app store more closely). On the flip side it's also much easier to hack into (see Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens stolen photos and the whole phone hacking scandal in the UK), and some of the things that Apple has done compromises the users financial and personal safety. So really it comes down to a choice, do you want a fully functional platform that has a decent amount of potential risk to your device and much less risk to you then go Android, or do you want a less functional platform with much less risk to your device and more risk to you, in that case go iPhone. I personally went Android (Galaxy S3) because I don't like the idea of having to jail break a device to be able to do what I want to do.

I considered WP, but Verizon seems to be keeping people away from it. (Only one (HTC) phone supported, and it needed to be special ordered. No plans to support the Nokia 900 (or whatever).)
Nokia is announcing their new WP8 devices next week. Verizon has committed to supporting the platform with the new devices, so if you can hold off a few weeks there will be better options on Verizon.

No idea why your comment warranted a 1 vote, so have a 5. Verizon has stated that they intend to fully support WP8. I hope that's true, but have some doubt. Their support for WP7 has truly been abysmal and it would be a BIG change for their sales people. Two of them I spoke to didin't even know they HAD a WP7 phone, then told me I really didn't want that. I ended up buying a very gently used HTC WP7 phone off ebay and have been pretty happy with it. Seems far more intuitive to me than my wife's iphone 4, though the latter feels to be a more solidly made device. I don't use too many apps, but there are some interesting sounding apps I've seen promoted as available for iPhone and Android with no mention of Windows. Hopefully that changes as soon as WP8 is released

We already bought three different Android phones. I don't think Verizon will change course over one phone.

Android all the way......You really don't want to buy into the Apple Ecosystem do you?

I can see how buying into the Apple ecosystem would be distasteful to some. I'm already in it and in general, if I weigh everything I purchase carefully, I can avoid some of the more insidious things and keep my experience pleasant. So I put this into a functionality question. Depends... how big is the pocket you'll put your phone in normally? Very oversized, slightly oversized, normal, slightly undersized or miniscule? If it is one of the bold ones then avoiding apple ecosystem and getting an S3 make sense. If you have pockets in the italicized values, then you are going iPhone if you want about that capability in a smart phone. If you want to shove your phone into one of the places that is neither bolded or italicized then you're not going with anything approaching a current gen smart phone and should just go and find someone's used Pre3/Pre2. :)
