Dammit I hate it...

...when you install a piece of software and it fucks up your system! A couple of days ago I needed an SSH client to access my webhotel server. I thought I'd go by recommendation and use OpenSSH. But I couldn't get it to work like I wanted, so I uninstalled it again and in the end I went with PuTTY which worked like a charm... Today I wanted to check my IP configuration, so I opened a command prompt like I've done a 1000 times before, entered "ipconfig" - and lo and behold: "ipconfig is not a recognized program name" (or something like that). Turns out that OpenSSH had replace my "Path" environment variable with it's own path. So now I have no idea what else might not be working on my computer anymore... I'm likely to have to fix more paths than just the System32 path... CRAP!

Just because a thing is new don’t mean that it’s better - Will Rogers, September 4, 1932:thumbsup: Word for that But don't worry, you're not the only one What I went through once: I had a bunch of folders left somewhere in C:\Windows\some folder from Windows (Office, actually) Update. Also, they were a bit weird, as I knew Update doesn't usually leave garbage in there, but I thought hey, maybe I have no idea, and it's ok. Now, I couldn't delete those as I would normally delete folders and files, due to ownership and permission issues. So, I fired up cmd, and started work. I took ownership of those, changed permission, all good. Still deleting didn't work. So I thought trying to delete them from cmd (ran as admin). Tested for one of the folders, it worked. All cool! So, I started typing the command to delete all of those pesky folders:
DEL C:\Windows\folder_name
only I accidentally pressed enter right afterC:\Windows\
, due to proximity of "\" to Enter key. Also, I hadn't used -S switch (do not delete system files). Now, it took some 5-10 seconds before I realized what I had done, and cancelled the command. It all looked ok, but after a few minutes, the system started acting weird, and it bluescreened. I restarted and tried to fix it, but all recovery was impossible. Needless to say, 10 minutes later I was reinstalling Windows (after having done a clean reinstall because of WinBloatTM only a week before). It still creeps me out when I think back to that day. Maybe I should post this in The Weird and the Wonderful?Full-fledged Java/.NET lover, full-fledged PHP hater. Full-fledged Google/Microsoft lover, full-fledged Apple hater. Just because a thing is new don’t mean that it’s better - Will Rogers, September 4, 1932Oh, that's nothing. A couple of months ago I finally managed to get Java programs to install in English, rather than Chinese -- that's after about a year of swearing lots and calling the Mrs to find the option to display them in English. It turned out that it was a little dictionary program, which had decided that all Java programs had to be in Chinese, and the setting which governs the installation language is so well hidden that googling for it dozens of times didn't find it (of course, it didn't help that the Java control panel itself was irrevocably in Chinese). At least you know when the program was installed, and it was recent, so you can roll back with System Restore (and then install WinSCP[^], instead.
