It does have the keys in the right positions - now take a close look at this[^] and tell me how to press the insert key. Then try to figure out how to press Ctrl+Insert and Shift+Insert ;)

I call it the stub key because it looks like the end of a cigarette with the ash just about to fall off.

Why don't 'modern' Word Processors (and editors) have a Change Case command to flip text written with Caps Lock on? Many still have a Change To Uppercase / Change To Lowercase command. The last Word Processor that I used that had a Change Case command out-of-the-box was TASWORD (pre PC days). I did write a macro for it when I had Word 6 (Office 97), but haven't bother recreating it for later versions of Word.

you know that word has it right? even word 6... and it's right in the menu bar... (in the ribbon it's less easy to find, but it's there...)

I see. I forget about that one, I've never used it, never noticeably hit it on accident...and in fact the keyboard I'm on right now doesn't even have it. Guess keyboard makers have realized that many people feel the same way about it I guess...(your comment brings up a good point: does it even have a common name? )

I call it the 'right mouse menu key'. I think its official name is the 'menu key', but that's not very descriptive.

Recently in a post here someone adviced me to remove that key from my keyboard, and I did it I have been almost a month without that key and I tell you that we dont need that key at all. No more pressing accidentally that key when formating your code or when pressing shift key. give it a try you wont regret.

I have it as backspace...following the intended colemak layout. Kinda need a programmer version of colemak {[}] are in default positions which just feels inefficient...

Why aren't you using a neural interface like the rest of us?

I love my portable neural interface device, but I find that sometimes my unconscious thoughts accidentally slip out without me noticing the itchy rash on my left bum cheek has been bothering me ever since that Thai hooker who turned out to be part-woman-all-man. Eh, what was the question again? :)

I honestly don't know why that key exists, it only causes annoyances... Luckily, most keyboards now have a dip in the side of the caps lock key where it borders the A key so you can't hit it when you hit the A key. And since my pinky is usually on shift anyways, I don't often hit it accidentally in that case. I do miss Tab on occasion though...

Why would you ever want to get rid of a key on your keyboard, when you can remap it to something useful - maybe a hotkey to bring up some menu of handy text functions? An easily-reachable hotkey that doesn't require you to press some combination of ctrl-win-rshift-F12... priceless

I write my assembler code in uppercase, so I need caps lock.

Being this a programming forum I can't unerstand why haven't you created a small app that would allow you to deactivate the caps key. then, depending on your needs you could activate or deactivate the normal behavior.

Because my keyboard already has 5 macro keys, my mouse has 17 more, and I have another peripheral that's about half of a keyboard - I'm all set on shortcut keys.

Recently in a post here someone adviced me to remove that key from my keyboard, and I did it I have been almost a month without that key and I tell you that we dont need that key at all. No more pressing accidentally that key when formating your code or when pressing shift key. give it a try you wont regret.

I use this handy little program that treats the Cap's Key as a Shift key, but lets you use Alt Caps when you really want Caps. http://www.worldinabox.co.uk/BoldFinger/[^]

you know that word has it right? even word 6... and it's right in the menu bar... (in the ribbon it's less easy to find, but it's there...)

I'm brazilian and english (well, human languages in general) aren't my best skill, so, sorry by my english. (if you want we can speak in C# or VB.Net =p)

No! How did I missed that? Alt-O E G Thank you. That is the most useful thing that I have been told for a long time. Gets my 5 vote.

Because my keyboard already has 5 macro keys, my mouse has 17 more, and I have another peripheral that's about half of a keyboard - I'm all set on shortcut keys.

Nice! The hotkeys on my keyboard are all at the top, above the F-keys, and not very ergonomically positioned... silly Dell. Also, boring Dell 3-button mouse... that 17-button mouse sounds awesome! I could take over the world with the added productivity of such a beast :-\

My macros are to the left (I tend to hit one of them on occasion thinking it's Ctrl, but there is a gap so it doesn't happen often). This[^] is the mouse I use (the previous model, the two buttons in the middle of the click buttons are on the left side of the left button on mine). Keyboard is the same brand, as is the other peripheral (a Nostromo).

CAPS LOCK IS FOR WUSSIES, I USE THE SHIFT KEY! :D

                                          It's an OO world.

I honestly don't understand. Is this a coolness thing? "I can type w/o caps lock" == "Look ma, no hands!" I don't need it for most things, but a lot of SQL conventions rely on all caps for either keywords (MS SQL) or object names (PL-SQL). For any other language I could understand it, but if you're following conventions then typing a word w/o caps lock doesn't make sense: SELECT TOP 10 * FROM mytable A INNER JOIN myothertable B ON B.ID = A.ID WHERE A.myfilter = 1 ORDER BY B.sortcolumn I don't use caps lock for most things, but I use it all the time when I'm coding in SQL.

Code responsibly: OWASP.org Mark's blog: www.developMENTALmadness.com Bill Cosby - "A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice."
