I saw the Lamborghini Murcielago yesterday and it was incredible in the flesh. It is very quite suprisingly, well, at least until they opened it all the way up and then it started howling, awesome! I still reckon though that acceleration and mid-range grunt are better factors to measure cars on. Only 1% of drivers will ever take their Ferrari, Lambo or Corvette* up to the fastest they can go. But every time they leave the garage they will test the accelaration and mid-range. Doing a nice mild 80 and then still being able to floor it and feel it kick you in the arse is magnificent, great for overtaking. Still, must be fun doing 217mph... ok, more like scary... but worth the change in pants. hehe That Vanquish is definitley the best looking, such class. :~ Still would like to rock up in a M3, M5 or EVO and give these supercars a fright by at least matching them most of the way with a way cheaper and less flashy looking car. Q cars are the best. Even John Simmons might like the list a bit. Too many classy cars for him though, so maybe not... ;P * They had a serious Corvette yesterday, but it was left for dead as the track is quite small and twisty, it could not handle the acceleration of the others out of corners. Still fun to watch, what a beast!

It is surprising that Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar does not have commercial cars in that speed range, considering that along with Ferrari they are among the top in F1. Like the racing cars, BMW has gear shift buttons on the steering wheel on their new sports models. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

The Vette I test drove had the electronic suspension and ant spin technology and it could accelerate like you would not believe. I am not sure of the 0-60 time but it was around 4 sec. You could not spin the tires other than a little 'squeak" because of the antispin stuff. The car would enter a curve ( this was in town so I never really got the vehicle above 75 mph ) and you could "feel" the suspension working to keep the car level. I could afford one but it would probably mean a divorce :) plus the fact that my body shape is no longer the optimum type for those little seats :(. But just think about it - for 50 grand or less you can embarrass Porsche drivers all over the place. That alone has gotta be worth something. Also the Vette handles better at speed that any car I have ever driven. They really have the steering nailed. Well if F1 has anything to say about road car production then Jaguar is a complete and utter paradox :-D Remember Jag, BMW and Mercedes are volume production companies. They don't hand make their cars or sell low volume with insane markup. They make money off the big sellers, like the 3 series. In fact most of their top end cars are big money loosers, meant to make a good brand. While building a super car beater is cool for the image, it simply is not cost effective. If you had enough money to spend on a super car even if BMW had one you would still probably rather get a Ferrari or Lambo. And anyway, a BMW M5, AMG Merc or high end Jag XK are hardly cars to sniff at, in most real world conditions they keep up with those super cars.

but, you could buy two cars that run at 100mph at that price. Practically, I don't have any place nearby where I can drive more than that. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

I looked at Porches, BMWs and such, but nothing touches a Vette in the bang for the buck category. A Viper is faster, but not $30,000 faster. And I never really cared for the coupes. Seems like you'd need two of them, one for each foot. The handling (even on light snow!) is incredible. There is no sway - the nose just points in a different direction. However, if you're going to buy one of these puppies, do yourself a favor and get a radar detector right away instead of waiting 'till later. Look, the Vette is a great car no doubt and off the track I saw it on it is amazing, I cannot complain. But yesterday there were things like 800kg Minis with twin turbo charged engines and nitrous systems, they hardly slow down in the corners and come out of them like a bat out of hell. No Vette can take a corner like a Mini, no car can actually. There was that Mazda R100 rotary and it was keeping up with the Porsche 910 Le Mans winner. Only reason is because the Porsche, and the Vette, are built for long straights and swooping curves where they can just build and build and build that top speed leaving screaming Minis in their dust. Another great example is when we went to watch the Super Trucks at Kilarney. They were drag racing against everything and anything anyone could throw at them, and they were anihilating the opposition. These huge trucks just planted their rubber down and pulled so hard. Only near the end of the strip did anything come close (obviously we are talking internal combustion engines here, not jet dragsters.) They then raced the trucks and most of the beaten opposition thumped them as they took the corners better. I am no fan of American muscle cars but the Corvette is damned fine.

Vettes have serious acceleration, but the handling is what makes them fun! And of course, image counts. Corvettes are to cars what Harleys are to bikes. :-D Chistopher Duncan Author - The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World (Apress)

This wouldn't help much here in Brazil. Here, the police use portable laser speed detectors or fixed piezoelectric weight sensors. There are still some old induction-based speed detection radars here, but they are being quickly replaced. I see dumb people

If I chose a bike then a Harley would be last on my list. A Ducati or Honda would be my choice (though the Buler division of Harley make damned fine designs if you ask me.) Different strokes for different folks. I cannot stand muscle cars, I like small engines outputting big kilowatts. I like the Q cars which are all go and little show. Also, lets face it, Europeans have handling down. Obviously the Corvette and Viper are helluva good handling cars, but they just can't match the fluidity of a Aston, the chuckability of a Peugoet 106 or the sideways mayhem of a Lotuse Elise. You pit a European against an American down a twisty pass and the European will come out tops, that is what is more important to the Europeans with their tiny roads, tons of mountains and wet conditions. Give me a Vette and I will have tons of fun no doubt, but I still like European more :)

but, you could buy two cars that run at 100mph at that price. Practically, I don't have any place nearby where I can drive more than that. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers
