Boringly, no - "Philip". Project manager at my first "real" company, and part of the reason I was there for over ten years. He was also a heavy drinker, which helped; had an expense account, which helped even more; and had four full-time girlfriends which gave us something to talk about when we were drinking the company money...

Yes. A good manager protects you from the layer(s) above and passes credit to the deserving. Bloody rare though.

Agreed. In all my years I have only ever worked with a fraction of PMs who inspired, listened, gave credit where it was due, protected from the many layers of upper management yet kept us informed of the overall scope and general overview of the project. In the UK it appears that they think that anyone can be a PM - whereas those who have to work with one know that isn't the case! :)

Our PM leaves today, in fact he has just gone, and thank the lord for that sir. I have had a number of good managers, but whenever project managers get involved things have not gone well. I am never sure who they are working for as it were, apart from themselves, certainly it has never been the developers. Mostly concerned with getting projects delivered without blame arriving at the company rather than concerned with delivering them right.

A whole lot of us crib about it. I am one of us. But, for a change, have you ever liked management? I am not referring to scenarios where you are prey for dimwits and you realize previous one was better.

Project management is an imaginative role. Everyone seems to imagine that it works.
