I can't. It's like I'm under some sort of spell. I know it's crap, yet I'm learning it anyway. Whyyyyyyy!!!??? :confused:

I'm brazilian and english (well, human languages in general) aren't my best skill, so, sorry by my english. (if you want we can speak in C# or VB.Net =p)

ASP.NET. No, seriously. I'm the DSJB (Departmental Sh!t-Job Boy), which means I administer our department server. It has our source control, runs our automated build process, and a bunch of network shares for distributing released and latest build software. I'm tired of people asking where stuff is located, so I've loaded IIS on the machine and made a little web app that displays links to the released and latest builds of each of our products. The scary part is I keep coming up with more and more useful things to do on the thing. I've added a password generator for one of the products that grants lower-level access for field service. I'm working on a data base app for our error messages that will eventually be used to generate a help file that goes along with the product. Somebody, please help me...

I've decided, for no particular reason (other than to have fun and expand my horizons), to learn Flash/ActionScript/Adobe Creative Suite. Recently got CS4 installed on my work computer and am working on geting them to upgrade it to CS6. I also have a Lynda.com subscription to help with the learning process. Never thought I'd go this far to the dark side. I'm even considering buying a MacBook Pro in the next couple months. Somebody stop me before I'm too far gone (or is it already too late :~ )! :(( Are any of you learning something completely useless for your job? ← (interpret that sentence in either of the two ways)
Recently bought a MacBook Air for XCode experiments. Currently experimenting with Xamarin MonoTouch. I use C in my work but I have C# and Java in my roots. Also I'm thinking about learning action script for Flixel library. Flixel looks like an easy way to develop 8 bit style games.

First I'd start with a comment regarding the weakness of Canadian beer. Then, a flippant remark on how it's always so hard to tell Canadians and Americans apart because they sound so similar, followed up with some commentary on their Olympic performance and an off-hand remark that the current NHL lockout is not really a problem, because Hockey's not really that important anyway. Hang on - you want him on side. Sorry, got mixed up there. Start off by complaining about the NHL lockout, congratulate him on a sporting effort in London, comment that it's refreshing to hear such a cultured accent in North America and mention, off-hand, that you wish Canadian beer was more widely available in Australia because that American stuff you're seeing in the shops is like water.

Recently got CS4 installed on my work computer and am working on geting them to upgrade it to CS6. I also have a Lynda.com subscription to help with the learning process. Never thought I'd go this far to the dark side. I'm even considering buying a MacBook Pro in the next couple months. Somebody stop me before I'm too far gone (or is it already too late :~ )! :(( Are any of you learning something completely useless for your job? ← (interpret that sentence in either of the two ways)
Flash will be dead in some near point of the future, so it is very useless to learn it right now. However:

I find it curious that the ad at the bottom of the page (Turned AdBlock off for work purposes) lead me to Here[^] which is most likely a scam (The base web-page doesn't exist, every link redirects you to an "a.php", and... Well... Yea) Tested from my home PC and got the identical ad - I wonder if their ad server's been hacked :wtf:

I think you're asking the wrong question. It should probably be phrased "Are any of you learning something at your job that is completely useless?" My answer to that is a resounding yes. Linux? PHP? Oracle PL/SQL? Perl? That's the crap I use at work to write boring old database based company data tracking systems. Bleh. Sure, it pays the mortgage. But I won't let that stuff in my door at home. At home, I write a c++/win32 api windows desktop app that's a combo midi sequencer/sound synthesizer/piano practice app. Learn flash if you want, but hopefully you'll find a USE for it. I think that's the key. You only live 80-some years - don't waste em learning dumb technology just cuz it's new. Use em to find the GOOD languages,OSs,tools,etc and do something GOOD =with= em. Tools are cool, but not as cool as what you can build with em.

The ad under the store (And at the top of the page) - Looks to be a Google Ad by the code (One of the tribalfusion ones), which is worrying - By the URL, it's country based, so probably won't appear your side (One of those flashy "I make $500 a day" type ads - I clicked outta boredom :p)

:laugh: That's partly why I run ABP - but even with it disabled, all I get is a couple of flash headers (I also run FlashBlock) and a Chrome "Pop-up blocked" for "GH BizOpp". Not that I want to look at ads anyway :-D

Always. Or at least most managers I've ever worked for thought they were useless. One manager bitched me out for learning how to do interrupt driven I/O. He didn't see the need when polling was built in to the software we were using. I had the last laugh, I eventually changed jobs to a higher paying one that required extensive interrupt programming. Another manager questioned my experiments with graphics, given our applications were text based. Then I saved them $40,000 for 3rd party software to do graphical document management that became part of the product and millions in lost revenue if the image processing would have needed to be outsourced as they had originally planned on doing. NEVER let yourself be limited by what your boss or company thinks is necessary to do their work.

I was learning French myself, but have been focusing on other things lately. Trying to learn another language is perhaps the most challenging activity I've ever engaged in. I've heard Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn for somebody who natively speaks an Indo-European language. Kudos. :thumbsup:
