There ARE a LOT of Reasons why I am correct. LOT, in this context, is a collective noun, therefore plural. One could say, for example, "There IS a LOT of Socialism in the Lounge", and that would be correct. But when we are talking about the individuals, then one should say "There ARE a LOT of socialists in the lounge". It is not a difficult concept, surely? Or would you say "There IS many birds in the sky?" Bugger me! I forgot about the A! It makes it a prepositional modifier. Of course I should have said there ARE LOTS. Apologies! [Slinks forlornly to rear of class and adorns himself with Conical hat festooned with large capital D]

Perhaps CP needs to change the Menu Item under "Community" that now reads "Non-English Language" to: "Cultural Zone Specific Discussions," and then list "UK," and other "zones" ? Or, is that what the "SoapBox" is for ? :) best, Bill
