One could say, for example, "There IS a LOT of Socialism in the Lounge", and that would be correct. But when we are talking about the individuals, then one should say "There ARE a LOT of socialists in the lounge". It is not a difficult concept, surely? Or would you say "There IS many birds in the sky?" Bugger me! I forgot about the A! It makes it a prepositional modifier. Of course I should have said there ARE LOTS. Apologies! A few points: - Collective nouns can be either singular or plural. - "A lot" is not a collective noun, and nor is "a lot of (anything)". - In this context, "a lot" is not even a determiner (you'd need to insert a relative pronoun into the clause to "convert" it into a determiner); it and it's predicate (or copular, whichever way you want to look at it) noun form the singular subject of the clause, pure and simple. You should have spent less time after hours in the master's quarters, and more time reading.
