Perhaps CP needs to change the Menu Item under "Community" that now reads "Non-English Language" to: "Cultural Zone Specific Discussions," and then list "UK," and other "zones" ? Or, is that what the "SoapBox" is for ? :) best, Bill

There ARE a LOT of Reasons why I am correct. LOT, in this context, is a collective noun, therefore plural. One could say, for example, "There IS a LOT of Socialism in the Lounge", and that would be correct. But when we are talking about the individuals, then one should say "There ARE a LOT of socialists in the lounge". It is not a difficult concept, surely? Or would you say "There IS many birds in the sky?" Bugger me! I forgot about the A! It makes it a prepositional modifier. Of course I should have said there ARE LOTS. Apologies! A few points: - Collective nouns can be either singular or plural. - "A lot" is not a collective noun, and nor is "a lot of (anything)". - In this context, "a lot" is not even a determiner (you'd need to insert a relative pronoun into the clause to "convert" it into a determiner); it and it's predicate (or copular, whichever way you want to look at it) noun form the singular subject of the clause, pure and simple. You should have spent less time after hours in the master's quarters, and more time reading.

I've had the dubious pleasure of having to spend time with a number of MPs. The Labour ones were, by and large, normal blokes (some of whom talked far too much). The Lib Dems were all schoolteachers and Indians (Indians are OK, but schoolteachers are idiots). I could see that each one of the tories was only out for himself. Of the three, the tories were the ones I would trust least with any kind of power over my life and the lives of my family. And those were people that DD aspires to emulate. X|

So you would trust Blair, who took this country to war on the basis of a complete lie. Brown, Darling and Balls, who between them brought the economy of this country to the point of bankruptcy. And the rest of them who would not know the truth if it bit them on the backside. And I have met a few MPs in my time (though not as many as you), and have exactly the opposite view to yours.
