I *am* unfriendly and antisocial. Aren't we all? Seriously though, I look rather average. BTW you don't look particularly unfriendly to me.

Why not give them the vacant seats? Sitting in the occupied ones would be rather uncomfortable for both parties.

Consider the following... 9/11 (not having this argument again). 7/7 London 21/7 London Bali Bombings Shoe Bomber The Srinagar Bombing US Consulate Bombing in Karachi The Haifa Bus Massacre Riyadh Compound Bombings Gateway of India (Mumbai) Bombings The Glasgow Airport Attack As you see from this VERY TINY SELECTION there have been a lot of islamic terror attacks. Therefore anyone who looks even vaguely like they may be islamic is going to be viewed with suspicion. Mind you, if you do get on a train and cannot find a seat, simply pull out a prayer mat, a koran and start wailing allah akbar and you will have a whole carriage to yourself.

Didn't vote you down What do you mean by looking islamic? Does Nish look islamic? Do all indians? (I can't tell the difference between chinese and japanese or several other east asians, is it the same as that?) Anyway, I'm not (and don't think I look) islamic. I doubt this is anything to do with terror attacks. Does it matter whether you are sitting next to a bag full of semtex, or 10 feet away?

Well, why would anyone downvote that? I kinda have a good guess as to who he is. Very few Indian CPians write good English with a british-slant and the fact that he's a little overly sensitive to potential racism has backed up my guess. That closely matches his character (historically speaking) :-)

Would you sit next to a foreigner in a bus or train? I look similar to Nish's profile pic, and most of the time, the place next to me is the last to be filled on public transport. I really shouldn't give a sh*t, but I've realized that I no longer sit, even if the entire f***ing carriage is vacant. Stupid Chinese / Vietnamese / Brits / French / etc (real country disguised)
To be honest I don't want to sit next to anyone on a bus or a train. Last time I was on a plane I sat next to a woman who whipped out an iPhone and showed me over 200 pictures of her trip to France. Unfortunately, I had to leave my toe nail clippers in security so I had no way to stab myself to death.

In all honestly, to the majority of Britons(and I guess that is where you are), YES you do. I can tell the difference between an Indian and a Arab and I reckon I could even tell the difference between an Indian and a Pakistani 75% of the time. Unfortunately most people, or at least half of them would think an Indian is a Muslim. I doubt you could tell the difference between an Englishman and A French man, or even an English man and a German, whereas us white people can. I expect you could even tell what part of India someone comes from just by looking at them with reasonable accuracy?

Why would anyone care about the person sitting next to them on public transport? If they smell then you move; if not, you open your book or paper and ignore them.

In India, if you leave your bag unattended, you lose your bag.... so we do not have this kind of problem here... :-D
Yes, but when you want to lose your bag that's fine.

I prefer not to sit next to anyone on a train, I would rather stand than take a single seat next to someone. This is because I am well over 6 foot tall and it is bloody uncomfortable trying to sit in a seat on a train with my legs in front of me. If I cannot sit sideways across the two then I will stand. Last time I got a train from London I was sat at a seat with no-one next to me when someone asked if he could sit in the other so I got up and let him have both. On the bus I aim to sit next to someone who is not overly large or not carrying loads of stuff. This is to minimise physical contact (I believe they don't want me touching them) and to avoid getting hit by someone else's stuff. I do not care what colour or nationality they are. I would try to avoid youngish females, worried they'd think I was creepy. I would try to avoid old people, they are more likely to try talking to me and I'm anti-social. That's why I work in IT. However, yeah, I think lots of English / British people have a problem with foreigners and with Asians. The reasons for this are many, but I think that being an island nation has something to do with it, it has created a them and us attitude in many. English people don't learn languages well and when they hear people talking in foreign languages they get flustered not knowing what is being said, probably a little paranoid that it is about them too. Asians in general have been getting lots of negative press for a long time, not just the Islamic thing, but the "coming over here, taking our jobs / living on benefits paid for by my tax money" thing too. The latter applying just as well, if not more so, to Eastern Europeans. Loads of English people are massive dicks. I am sure that loads of other nationalities are massive dicks too.

If we had trains in my area I would sit next to any one wouldn't matter to me. We don't have a public transit system in my area. But I do notice this behavior in pretty much every one in my area. Doesn't matter what race they are the people in my area are mistrusting of any outsiders. And trust me it is easy to spot someone that isn't from my area.

You probably mean white Europeans (and probably black ones too). Americans can usually identify the Brits, but are not very good at identifying people from other parts of Europe.

I have to laugh at this, I'm 6`3, born in Oz with cauc heritage going back a long way (so I'm white) but I wear a full beard, I was asked if I was Islamic in a Yangon market a number of years ago by a very dodgy looking character. All it took was a bushy beard and a slight tan to invoke the stereotype.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

But that's the point, they do care. I've noticed the same pattern over the years. Idiot, aren't I? Instead of reading the newspaper or whatever, I watch the vacant seat next to me.
