On the surface

There seem to be quite few people pre-ordering Surfaces. A tablet, IMHO, isn't a casual purchase - there's many on the market, and each have pros and cons. Unless you are specifically buying one as a developer (or with a view to developing for the Surface) isn't buying $500 worth of hardware, sight unseen, without even real production reviews, a little, erm, naive? Remember the first XBox 360 and its various coloured rings of death problems? LifeCam? Zune? Not criticising MS - it may be onto a winner - but can't understand folks willing to take that sort of gamble on a new product sight unseen.

while I agree with you, in general, it happens all the time at Apple...
I'm beginning to hate the news...the world was much nicer when I was illiterate Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

I had a bet with myself about how long it would take before Apple was mentioned... I honestly don't recall what it was like when the first iPad was released - similar I expect, but Apple do have a better reputation on the HW front than MS - and it was a revolutionary product. From what I can see, the Surface is JAT (just another tablet) really...

iPad2 is a JAT too and the same thing happen. Why should it be any different for MS?

Well, because the iPad1 was already proven and people wanted to upgrade - I'm not certain why they were so keen myself, but it was at least something proven and much less of a gamble than giving microsoft your money before anyone's actually seen the thing in action., i nearly bought a Transformer at one point, looked great on paper and in the ads. But I waited. when i started looking at the issues owners had (like it didn't play HD movies beyond about 3 fps) I was pretty glad I didn't buy earlier. I just wonder how people can bring themselves to throw money at a company based solely on that company's hype.

well people could have many reason, one can only make hypthesis maybe there is fan boyism maybe there is status seeking maybe there is the desire to be the first to have something which looks quite different (this status seeking in another form) most certainly there is the fact that it will be a tablet that can be used as tablet, while also being usable as a normal computer (with all desktop thing you expect, such as excel, mouse and keyboard, blablah)

Microsoft Surface has been around since 2008 ? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_PixelSense[^]) Oh, you mean the new product of the same name, I don't see why its so good either, it took over 6 months for the IPad to be a solid product for the general non-technical consumer. Maybe they are on a winner, however I don't really think so.

While I think the hardware does make it JAT, the thing that makes it different from other tablets is the OS. Most people use Windows on their desktop, so if there's a tablet with an OS based on the same design principles, that may feel comfortably familiar. Windows 8 for the PC will be able to run 'Windows 8' (metro) apps that run on the tablet, and in case of the Surface Pro, you can run traditional desktop programs on your tablet. I don't know if it'll be enough to win people over, I haven't preordered one myself, but I think it's a worthy attempt at least.

I agree. So, to save you feeling like a twat, I recommend you buy me one for my birthday (since you can't sneak away from the family to pay me a visit for free piss), I look at it as all shiny and impressive while thoroughly pissed. Then the next day bitch and moan about it's shitty 1366 x 768 resolution screen.

*checks flight schedule. At every party I put on. The kids brewed a lovely keg of Arc d'Triumph last weekend, which is a nice 6.4% alcohol. Shall be bottling it 3 weeks this Saturday and drinking it the week after.

Bear in mind that MS are giving Surface's away to all their employees and that's a whole chunk taken out there.
