Appreciating the teams work
-
I'm really thinking if appreciating the team's accomplishments openly time to time does any good? The day I appreciate the team, the productivity falls - for that particular day. Again it takes 2-3 days to come back to form. I've been noticing it for the 4th time now. I thought encouraging them with some praises would make them work more. But :sigh: "Wow guys that's perfect. That's exactly how I wanted it to be. Great job guys! truly appreciate it. Let's discuss the next phase tomorrow" - This is supposed to be the message. But I when I sent, it got morphed to : "Thanks guys, I was expecting something like this. We'll discuss the next about the phase tomorrow" If I had sent the actually message I had in mind, the team would certainly slack out the next two days watching Youtube & facebook. :)
Starting to think people post kid pics in their profiles because that was the last time they were cute - Jeremy.

Then don't praise them. Become a real taskmaster and let them clean the toilet or the parking lot with a toothbrush when anything displeases you. Not having to clean something with a toothbrush will then be the highest praise they can expect. Feel free to be a little unfair and stay unpredictable, so that they keep working hard and don't even dare to think of putting the toothbrush away.

I would say you need to find new developers. I usually could care less when my boss praises me. I get a lot more out of my users praises. Find developers like that and you won't have to worry about their productivity because they will always be trying to impress their users. The reason I say they will always be productive is because even when a user praises you they also have something they don't like about the program to go along with the praise.

The day they realize that they won't get any appreciation no matter what they do, you also won't get the extra from your team any more. An evening out after a successful project will drop your teams productivity for a few days. No appreciation will drop it for good.

It is impossible for people to work at the same intensity or productivity every hour of every day. Are you sure that they aren't giving twice the effort before the praise, in attempt to make deadline or impress you, and then need a little time of half effort? Maybe you are expecting unrealistic productivity, because you are seeing them give a lot of energy to finish a project, a level of which would be unsustainable? Then again, I don't know your team, maybe they do have productivity issues.

Version 3.0 now available. There is no place like 127.0.0.1No you are wrong. Message history[^] I had been posting very few per week. I figured out spending the entire day watching the lounge just eats up productivity. When there's a breather available between tasks, Certainly I do come here and spend some time posting replies. But All I need to worry is to check if my Boss feels I'm slacker. Correct?

No I think the message has been taken very seriously. It's not even a rant. I'm perfectly happy with the current team. They just do what is there in the plan. Though there was a sluggish start after the praise, they tighten up towards the end, meeting the deadline. Or at least they heed to the pressure I put on them towards the end.

It's a very good team. They just tend to relax when I say we are well ahead of the schedule. It's a natural tendency to drop a gear down as the pressure is less. I'm just learning the nuances of putting up the email texts. That seriously has an impact on the team. If I announce a grand victory for little achievements, it really has a negative impact. Though the team does an excellent job, I just need to maintain - "That's what is expected" line. So it's up to me to evolve as a good team lead.

I see you couldn't care less about speaking English.

In the United States it is completely acceptable to use it that way. And yes I couldn't care less about speaking English as long as my point gets through to the person I am communicating with. Which it obviously did. He didn't agree with it but I think he got the point. I kind of feel bad for you that all you have to do all day is troll the forums and critique how people write/speak English. And by the way English isn't the only language I can screw up either. I am very capable of screwing up French and Spanish as well. Oh I forgot Klingon. I can screw that one up as well. I think you get my point. I hope you have a wonderful day of trolling. http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ico1.htm[^]

Sorry knob jockey, I pop on to Code Project of an evening, not on here during the day. Sad is someone calling themselves a CEO and not being able to create complete and correct sentences. As for fine in the US, snippets of shit like, my bad are used, still not acceptable Englich.
