2nd interview

The second interview might be more of a people interview rather than technical bearing in mind the senior VP is going to be there. Working within the team etc.. Elaine The tigress is here :-D

After 1.5 years without a "real" job, I think I might be landing a post with a cool company. The first interview went well and I think I'd be the perfect candidate for the position. Now I've been called back for a second meeting on Friday morning to meet with the Senior VP and Director of the Research Robotics Division. While not trying to get my hopes up, what do "second interviews" usually entail? I've always either gotten the job or not after one interview. What should I be prepared for in a second interview? Josh Knox
I always considered second interviews to be very similar to second dates. It means they might like you, but don't get your hopes up in case things don't work out. :-D You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

The first interview is intended to weed out the technically incompetent. The second interview is intended to weed out the socially incompetent. At the boatyard where I consult, one of our primary qualifications for a job seems to be: a) having a drug problem b) being on probation c) needing bail money on your first day of work d) all of the above And what's worse, is they keep firing the guys who manage to keep their nose clean (literally and figuratively). Congratulations :) Normally I would have answered and said that the first interview tests your technical skills, and the second interview tests your social skills, but I would not count on that. Last year when I went unemployed and I was trying to get a job I made this assumption and lost big time when I went to meet with the VP of Software Engineering. I figured he was a VP and slightly separated from the technology, there will not be any tough technical questions. I was wrong, and I messed up on some of the areas that I was not as strong in, especially since the VPs questions were 3 times as hard as the group interview that I went through. The bottom line is that I would go in there expecting that person to test you social skills, however I would not assume that there will not be any technical questions, and further more, I would not assume there will not be any hard technical questions. Good Luck.

I have something similar lined up here as well. I think it'll be a hands on "sit in front of this PC and lets see what you can do" kind of thing. Needless to say, I'm hacking away at home and trying to practise doing everything without touching the mouse. I hear that impresses people  ASP.NET can never fail as working with it is like fitting bras to supermodels - it's one pleasure after the next - David Wulff

I cannot comment on 2nd interviews for other companies (I also got all my jobs on a first interview) but here in a 2nd interview two things happen: 1, You meet the boss. Now that the slaves have whittled the list, the boss can be bothered to check the candidates out. :-D 2, You spend a good hour doing a real world "test." In fact what we do is find some bugs or requirements for a current real project and give them to the guy and see how he handles it. Within his position of course. We can't do that for the 300 applicants in the first round, so we do it in the second when it is down to just the few. Good fortune Josh!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm very anxious to get the interview over with. It's a support position but it does invlove a wide range of skills from programming(c/c++, scripts), some web dev, networks, troubleshooting and mechanical abilities, as well as the potential for occasional international travel. Fortunately I use most of the required skills on a regular basis. I'm 97% sure I'm the man for the job and after 1.5 years werkin' on my own I sure hope I get it. Thanks again everyone. Wish me luck tomorrow. Josh Knox
