Bravo! :-D Were you expecting anything less? The reason I ask isn't trivial. I've long believed that no employee should be surprised by what he/she learns in a performance review. Anyone who is surprised by the encounter is either extraordinarily dense, or working for an incompetent manager. Regular feedback to employees should give a clear indication as to whether the employee is meeting expectations or falling short, and should include corrective guidance to allow the employee to modify behaviors or skills deficiencies well before review time. It should always be a mutually understood outcome by the time a formal review is delivered.

Can I just copy and paste that on an email to my superiors...? :-D
Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

Feel free to do so; I haven't copyrighted it. In fact, I don't think it was an original thought, just something I read along the way and adopted as sensible.

Not really - but one never knows!

Absolutely agree.

The third scenario is that the decision is made in advance - i.e. it's not you in particular, they just have changed their minds, or only wanted someone for a short period to begin with - just using the probationary period for cheap contractors - and I HAVE experienced companies that do just that!. Otherwise I agree entirely - when I was a manager I would constantly be letting my chaps know how they were getting on - called them in for a chat on a whim - or over a beer or coffee. I see it as a failure of me as a manager if one of my people isn't performing - so went out of my way to make sure they knew how they were flying and gave them help where necessary to take corrective measures early on. Review time was just a good excuse for me to let my bosses know formally what a great team I had, and tghat I needed a bigger budget to be able to pay them their worth! Hey - I was a GREAT boss to work for! Ask any of my girls ;)
