According to Sky[^] Windows 8 has had a lacklustre reception. I can agree because the cost of it, roughly £21 is way over-priced. :laugh: What caught my eye was Ballmer's comment "To continue this success it is imperative that we continue to drive alignment across all Microsoft teams, and have more integrated and rapid development cycles for our offerings." :omg: My interpretation is "We really screwed up and we failed to sort out our internal communication. Once again, we fouled up on integration and we were too late coming to market with our over-priced operating system and Surface tablet To continue this success it is imperative that we continue to drive alignment across all Microsoft teams, and have more integrated and rapid development cycles for our offerings."

IMO, Ballmer is still there, and will be there until either he or MS dies/goes bankrupt, because he is the perfect expression of MS's culture: aggressive, egoistic, very much of a schoolyard bully which isn't completely dumb. And on top of it all, to a not so small extent short-sighted from a technical POV.

Having followed the rise of Sinofsky over the last few years, I feel the answer is far more political. Sinofsky was the first person who managed to garner enough power to be a real threat to Ballmer. The fact that WinDiv is split between two people is an indication that he's determined not to let anyone become powerful enough to oust him. Sinofsky was a very divisive figure - while he was undoubtedly very passionate and capable, he was also a micro managing control freak. And this trait caused a lot of managers to jump ship in recent years. The bottom line is that it's still far too early to say whether or not Windows 8 will be a success. I never thought I'd say this, but since I've been using it on an Ultrabook, I've actually enjoyed using it - so much so that I will be writing some software to run on it (this software will also run on Windows Phone 8, and should seamlessly sync between the two). I would say that the Ultrabook is actually Windows sweet spot right now.

I use Windows 8 for half a year on my Dell Inspiron Duo and I really like it a lot. It is snappy, and works even faster than Windows 7 I had on that convertible netbook. I am about to buy upgrade licence to finalize the settings.

It's a shame Sinofsky had left the company, but as other points out, he was famous for making several high profile Microsofters to leave the company as well, perhaps his karma finally reached him. :-D

I had mixed emotions about this ... on the one hand a "Jobs" like guy to herd all the development kitties into a deliverable ... on the other hand a "Jobs" like guy working environment that, when the "Jobs" like guy is no longer available ... becomes what? what is the company to do then? (Good luck Apple) It's good it is happening now ... while there are still innovators left there. There are brilliant minds there and I think they are all aware that if they don't collaborate, there won't be any empires to build upon. Julie Larson-Green and Tami Reller will carry on the "Sinofsky works" while the empires move to collaboration (or die). Who knows, maybe they can even attract back some their lost souls.
