No, this isn't a post about the box model. I'm just curious how you all handle the problem of keeping boxes for expensive items in case you need to return the item. If I buy something expensive (computer, printer, game console, etc.), I'll usually keep the box for a while (several months) so that I can return it exactly as I received it (if it is defective or what have you). However, I don't like boxes (and packing material and such) taking up space, so maybe I could just return things without their boxes. How do you handle the box/space tradeoff?

I try to make enough money not to care. When that fails I keep the box for thirty days. When I finally clean-up in about 120 days if a box is more than 30days old I trash it.

I usually just clutter up my garage with them until the space runs out and then I throw out the oldest ones. A friend of mine put a shelf all the way around their garage, just low enough from the ceiling to fit most boxes. It's also a good way to show the insurance company what you had if your valuables get stolen.
There's a bit market for empty boxes purported to contain expensive goods. :suss:

If the gadget works after 1 week, it'll work for 1 year... so, boxes in the Recycle bin.

Why not just break down the boxes so that they fold flat? That saves a lot of space when you don't have much. Plus - I keep them around for shipping stuff out too.

They usually contain shaped styrofoam or other material that prevents collapsing the box.

..as soon as it's opened, warranty is usually gone. The only thing I don't open on receiving, are harddisks.

I keep 'em in the loft. Not for returning as much as moving house in the future, or selling later - get a much better price for boxed goods.

When I have space available, I save the box until the warranty runs out - usually one year or less. If I don't have the space, into the bin with them! For fairly inexpensive electronics items, I usually wait a few weeks, since the infant mortality for such devices is such that, if they don't fail in a few weeks, odds are that they'll outlive me.
