No, this isn't a post about the box model. I'm just curious how you all handle the problem of keeping boxes for expensive items in case you need to return the item. If I buy something expensive (computer, printer, game console, etc.), I'll usually keep the box for a while (several months) so that I can return it exactly as I received it (if it is defective or what have you). However, I don't like boxes (and packing material and such) taking up space, so maybe I could just return things without their boxes. How do you handle the box/space tradeoff?

..as soon as it's opened, warranty is usually gone. The only thing I don't open on receiving, are harddisks.

I keep 'em in the loft. Not for returning as much as moving house in the future, or selling later - get a much better price for boxed goods.

When I have space available, I save the box until the warranty runs out - usually one year or less. If I don't have the space, into the bin with them! For fairly inexpensive electronics items, I usually wait a few weeks, since the infant mortality for such devices is such that, if they don't fail in a few weeks, odds are that they'll outlive me.

I usually just clutter up my garage with them until the space runs out and then I throw out the oldest ones. A friend of mine put a shelf all the way around their garage, just low enough from the ceiling to fit most boxes. It's also a good way to show the insurance company what you had if your valuables get stolen.
