I'm gonna get laid...off
-
next week. 7 years. Severance plus emergency savings, shouldn't last long. Alms for the poor. :sigh:
Getting laid off always sucks. I can only say from my own experience that being bitter about it doesn't help. I hope you find a new job soon. In the meantime see if you can find a voluntary job, if not for the selfsatisfaction, it looks good in the CV. Being without work for to long isn't good for your psyche. I'm a born couch potato that would degrade completely if I didn't have a job I needed to go to.
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.

Its not every day you get laid and get paid
Do you really think it's appropriate to try to make jokes when someone has just lost their job and is worried about their finances?

What better time is there? Go and tell soldiers on the front line, whose children might made into orphans and their wives left destitute in the next ten minutes, that they should never laugh and joke. If you can't laugh, then you might as well lay down and die.

I've been laid off twice, both times with a two year gap in employment of any kind. Overall, I went 13 years without a "real" job, living hand to mouth without access to any sort of benefits. The signs are pointing subtly to the possibility of it happening again in the next year or so. It's unspeakably hard - financially and emotionally - but it's survivable, and you can recover. Good luck!
Will Rogers never met me.
Thanks, Roger.

I have thought about this possibility, quite a bit.

That's after the fact. Tell those same wives and children that their loved one is going to die and then see where the chuckles are.

But I did land a much better job in about 2 weeks (salary, benefits, work conditions).
Either time is (a) economy is great, (b) you're a junior staff, or (c) you're such good programmer people just can't wait hand you an offer Which is it?
dev

Not really. I claim it as God's timing. I needed a job. A good company contacted me directly on Linked-In. I followed through.

YES,when I got laid off I loved the jokes my friends told me becasue they had all been through the same thing at one point in their career. You need to laugh, forget and learn new things. It is totally appropriate and its obvious you need some mind bleach at this point.

Plus no one really wants sympathy, they want to have fun an enjoy life even if they are facing death. Eulogys always strat with a joke and they always get the friend who can tell the best stories to write them.

I'm delighted that you are such an expert in the human condition that you know how everyone reacts. I am humbled to be in the presence of someone as awesome as yourself. Please, can we breathe some of your air?

I think we are all still in this line of work, especially around deadlines
