Haven't tried Paint.Net in a couple of years. Last time I used it I was unsatisfied with how it handled layers. But you're right in that it's good for simpler projects. If I'm just doing something quick (maybe resize and adjust the colors a bit) I use IrfanView[^]. For batch processing I have a program I wrote myself.[^] Hopefully PSP will be a good choice for more complex projects. It looks promising so far.

For years I've been using various freeware apps for graphics (and just about everything else). And while the results were mostly good, on occasion something would go totally awry and reduce a graphics project to smoldering pixels (like the massive memory leak in Photo Pos Pro). Yesterday I actually paid money for Paint Shop Pro X5 Ultimate[^]. Good God. What I've been missing. :omg:

I've used Paint Shop Pro for a number of years since version 1. I'm still using Version 7 and it still does what I need it to do quite well yet. I did try some of the free stuff and found too many of the tools I have become accustomed to were either missing or where implemented in a manner I found difficult to use efficiently. It is a good in between application, alot of the pro features found in the Adobe Photoshop products and better than the open source stuff, for well less than $100.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

The first thing I noticed is how clean and sharp it draws text. One of the problems I was having with (free) Photo Pos Pro was the text having such ragged edges.

I still use Paint Shop Pro 9 (purely because it was the last version before Corel bought it). If X5 is anywhere near as good (and Corel haven't removed half the usability and added a heap of bugs as they generally do) it should be superb. I think it ranks up there with Photoshop, but at a very small fraction of the price.

PSP is pretty good, we used to use that up to version 6 or so. Nowadays I use Paint.net because it's free and my image editing needs are rather basic. Good to hear that Corel haven't totally ruined PSP though, if I need to have a proper image editor in future then I might go back to it.

I used to work time to time with Corel Photo Paint about an eon ago and it was very good. Far more intuitive than Adobe Photoshop. I played little with Paint Shop Pro and I liked it too. IMO Corel is a good company.

Corel have good ideas, but my experience with their implementation has always been patchy. I loved CorelDraw and Photo-Paint in the 90's, but each version added good features, but damaged the core of the product, introducing bugs so that what used to work crashed unpredictably. And in those days, it took forever to save, so you tended to risk it, and lost an hour or so's work, rather than loose 5 minutes out of every ten trying to save. It didn't help that often the act of saving would crash the program either...:mad: They weren't the only ones with these problems (Samna / Ami had similar problems with autosave corrupting the old and new versions of a document), but it did colour my perceptions (and the atmosphere).

I get nervous about upgrading stuff I like - particularly when it's a Corel product, I've been bitten too many times before. In PSP9 I have everything where I want it, my pressure sensitive tablet-and-pen combo works, and it would probably take me ages to get used to the new version (because I don't use it often enough, but when I do use it, it's because I need it). If I used it often enough to learn the new version, I might do it. I'll put it on my "consider this" list, and see if I get time to play later this year.

I have every version since PSP7. I think it's 7. Notice I didn't say "have had". None of them overwrote the previous version. No reason not to take the plunge and buy the latest version. Of course, it probably would have been better to do it when they were selling it for $29. :p

I'm still using 7 as well. I try out Corel's offerings about once a year and haven't found any features I'd need. Plus, I really despise the grey on black UI. (I've also used Photoshop and found it useful for precisely one thing--dealing with alpha layers was easier, at the cost of a really confusing UI experience.)
