Hi, I've got an install Shield LE project to help deploy one of our winforms apps. All fine & dandy, well ish, until the project was passed on to someone who doesn't have it installed. My problem is that after a little bit of Googling, it looks like InstallShield LE is no longer available.

    • Following the instructions on MSDN[^], the download link fails.
    • After a bit of digging I found the installer I used for LE. We ran this on m'colleague's machine, and it asked us to register, the link to the registration site is also dead.
    • I went to the parent company's site here[^], I can get a Free Trial, a demo or various paid for versions. The free light edition seems to have disappeared (or is well hidden).

Personally, I found the new stuff far inferior to the simpler one that came packaged with VS <= 2010, but my installation requirements are simple. My questions: Is this still available - if so where can I get a license for my colleague? What are the free alternatives? I won't get agreement to pay for a packager like this as we do so little of it, my main concern is not losing the effort I had to put into the set-up project in the first place.

It looks like a problem with the learn.flexerasoftware.com domain. If I was paranoid, I might think they'd deliberately disabled the domain to stop people from downloading a free version of their tool. :~ (Google's cached version was last updated on 4th February this year, so it looks like a relatively recent problem.) As for free alternatives, I've heard good things about WiX[^].

I've been using InstallShield 7 Pro for years but it has plenty of bugs and really doesn't have a lot of features that I need now, but a new copy is close to $5K.... so, I've been looking into open source alternatives. So far, InnoSetup [^] looks promising.

That was my conclusion, until I searched the main site after which I switched to the view that they'd dropped free support. I've seen WiX mentioned elsewhere, might be worth a look.

:wtf: For that cash I'll write my own. I didn't like the LE version, it took two days to get the MSI working, whereas the old bundled one would have taken a few hours.Very much "who moved my cheese?" I'll give InnoSetup a look over, thanks for your suggestion.

You found the built-in Setup and Deployment project BETTER?? Very odd. It's quite limited in it's capabilities and I found it harder to do things than it should have been. I've used InstallShield (full version) and Wise For Windows Installer, among a couple of other free ones, and found that they all pretty much do things in a standardized way, whereas the Setup and Deployment project does things it's own way, and doesn't do a good job of it if you have to go beyond just a simple "put these files here" installation.

My thoughts exactly... that's for the Pro version. There's two other versions I believe.

My post had to be modded through the following: My needs for MSI packages have been historyically basic: I do this once in a blue moon (last time was July-ish), I'm mostly web There was a heavy case of "Where is the stuff I know" But yes, I found the built-in stuff for VS2010 better than the LE edition for 2012..
