I haven't been this irked for a while (perhaps since I saw that movie pretending to be the second Matrix movie). Powering down Google Reader[^] Any recommendations for a replacement? Needs to run on at least both Mac and PC, with syncing.

Well that sucks. I liked having an RSS reader as a web app thingy rather than a desktop app, but then again, I rarely even visit the reader. I guess I'm one of those people who are contributing to its decline. Any good web-based replacements you can recommend? Marc

Not sure yet - I guess I'm still hoping they change their mind, or maybe even (ick) add the functionality to G+. I'd even be willing to send them some money. I know they need it to fricking fund driverless cars and $1500 google bloody glasses. I've heard some good about NewsBlur[^] (but don't really like the look of it, plus it's being hammered now) or The Old Reader[^] (looks like a very early beta). :(( /sigh. Guess I'll have to try these out myself.

Hmmm. Maybe a web-based reader as a Ruby on Rails app will be my next learning project. Marc

Actually, I've never been impressed with Reader. The experience was terrible, the way it organized feeds was just confusing, and always required a huge effort to follow them all (instead of displaying everything in a quick glance like iGoogle does). I always loved iGoogle, but it is also going away. None of the alternatives looked appealing, though. Don't know what to do.

I am a regular user of Google Reader and feel disappointed that its going to close. :sigh: Is there any good desktop RSS readers for Windows? Any suggestions?

I've never used an RSS reader, and I have to confess that I don't even know what RSS stands for. (Don't tell me; I like having little mysteries in my life)

I'm already using Zite on my iPad (I prefer it over Flipboard), but it's hardly a replacement.

It seems to learn better what types of articles I actually end up reading. I have it pointing at a number of fairly broad categories (Programming, Web Design, etc.), and I find that many of the items it throws in "Top Stories" actually are stuff that I would have read, but might not have found otherwise. I never felt that way when I was trying out Flipboard. Maybe I just need to try it again and see if it's the same as I remember.
