This is pretty much why the Founders of the US insisted on separation of church and state: marriage itself has always been a secular affair, even when the wedding is done as part of a religious ritual, no religious ritual has ever been required for a legal marriage, and there is no state church with authority to say what is and isn't legal (yet; our Talibangelicals are still working on that.) Granted, this freedom has led to the Mormons and Scientology, for which we profoundly apologize to the rest of the world.

    You're welcome.

Why is the US then interfering in the Mormon practice of plural marriage?

And so you should. No one should have to endure the sheer awfulness of Battlefield Earth.

I liked the book, but the film sucked.

It would create too many bugs in TurboTax.

To be fair, the book itself is actually really good (one of my favorites). The only thing the movie by Jonnie boy and the book have in common is the name, and one or two minor details. (Note: my commentary about the book should in no way be construed as any defense or justification of Scientology, or an attempt at lessening the forcefulness of the proffered apology for said creation of this country).

Maybe Pete can perform the ceromony for Wizardzz's upcoming wedding.

It was broke, so I fixed it.

Much of what the federal courts do in the US is find a balance between competing rights. The courts have long held that if a law is constitutional by itself, and is justifiable by itself, then freedom of religion does not trump it: you cannot claim a religious right to engage in human sacrifice, for example, even with a willing victim, nor can you claim a religious right to run a "temple" of prostitution (there was a case in San Francisco in the early 70s when a neo-pagan group dedicated to Venus opened a temple where clergy would engage in sex acts with worshippers for a donation; the group claimed that the ancient and well documented practice of sacred prostitution was their chief sacrament. The courts didn't buy it and they were all convicted of running a brothel.) Bigamy is illegal, and for good reason that have nothing to do with targeting Mormons or anyone else for their religious beliefs. The courts have routinely sided with the law in this matter as a result.

I'm no friend of religion, but one way to destroy it is to overload it with nonsense variations (church --> Christianity (to some folks)) such as Jedi and what-not thereby making people feel absurd about themselves. Religious people should start requiring schools to teach new math, where 1 + 1 = three (the word, not the number), thereby showing the "scientific" people that absurdity runs both ways.

It's Scotland - the home of Whisky, Are you surprised that something like this would be considered there?

Just to be clear, the US does not interfere in the religious ceremonies of the Mormon church nor does it preclude Mormons from practicing their religion in their daily life. However in terms of registering a marriage with the state that is a different matter. Which means that are more than a couple of Mormons that have plural marriages as recognized by their religion (not the state.) Actually there are at least two towns which one could say exist on that principle.

Sadly, I'm no longer surprised by anything. I do feel sorry for our children given the type of world we're leaving them with. But alas, it's not politically correct to have convictions that are so seven days old.
