That pretty much was the recipe. I don't really go for measuring and finesse, and things are rarely the same each time. I used 2 onions, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 chillies, probably about a fist sized amount of the other veg (more or less). Chop the onions, garlic and chilli, sweat for a few minutes in a large pan. Cube the rest of the veg (as small as you can be bothered chopping, not very for me), add to the pan and sweat for a further 8 to 10 minutes. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, around 800 ml of vegetable stock. Add in mixed herbs, salt, plenty of ground black pepper, a good shake of sugar, then a handful or so of pearl barley. Taste and add in anything else you have to hand that you like, I put in a good glug of brown sauce, Worcestershire sauce would have gone in had I had it. Some dried chilli flakes to add a little more heat the last time I made it. Simmer gently for 30 to 40 minutes with the occasional stir.

Our allotment association has a website, just a simple Wordpress thing, but as I am one of the few members under pensionable age it has obviously fallen to me to do it. There is to be a section for recipes, to get some content up last week I put a few of my recipes up, just to play around with the structure and to have something there if anyone did come along. Today I tried to access them at work, my shepherd's pie recipe has been blocked by Websense under the category "Message Boards and Forums", yet the other recipes are OK. I wonder what it was about this particular recipe that it took exception too. In related news, I made a large pan full of what I am going to call soup last night, and bought a very generous portion in for my lunch today. Onions, garlic, chillies, potato, sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, swede, turnip, mushrooms, peppers, courgette, tin of chopped tomatoes, some vegetable stock, a few herbs, good squirt of brown sauce and plenty of grand black pepper, plus a shake of sugar and some pearl barley. Bloody lovely it was, flavoursome and left a tingling to the lips.

Ah, the ubiquitous "brown sauce". I believe all the restaurants on our main street are hooked to the same pipe of "brown sauce"... Seriously though, your recipe sounds delish!

Well two sources of Brown, HP or Daddies. Do you not have The Sausage Sandwich game over there? Red sauce, Brown sauce, or nothing at all.

Public guess if the celebrity has red sauce, brown sauce, or no sauce at all on their sausage sandwich. Celebrity gives answer. All 3 then hang up and carry on with their weekend.
