My company are on the lookout for some software API that we can interface with from our WPF app. It is required to be able to scan data from a variety of pre-printed forms, filled in by hand (checkboxes and handwritten text). do you have any experience of any of the various products out there you could recommend (or otherwise?) There just isn't time to evaluate them all, so I'm looking for ways of significantly shortening my short list!

You need a tool. Preferably a cheap one :)

Have a look at the products of Abbyy http://www.abbyy.com/[^] Allows you to create and read the templates and has an API. Been a while since I worked with it, so I don't know how up-to-date they are...
thanks - they're on my list. - Were they any good when you did work with them?

Tanks for your kind suggestion, perhaps you would recommend one? Instead of trying to be funny

It was very easy to create the templates, just scan a document and add the areas of interest in a designer. Then you use the template to process whatever you need to process. The API to automate was very straightforward. We did have some problems with it in production but that was down to GIGO in combination with the used hardware... It just couldn't deal with lipstick on the documents (and no, you don't want to know :~)

ABBYY Finereader 9.0 came free with my scanner. It's very good - and the OCR works very well - although handwritten text is a bit hit and miss - but personally I'm amazed it can do it all. I can't say about the API though - I haven't used it. They have trial versions on the website - so I'd recommend trying those first.
