The Dr is off to Trenzalor. Next Saturday is "The Name Of The Doctor"

I was brought up to respect my elders. I don't respect many people nowadays.

I'm half scared, half excited. His name is one of the biggest mysteries and I want to keep calling him 'The Doctor', not 'John Smith' or something unpronounceable due to a million apostrophe's. The poster for the episode says 'his secret revealed' but there's still a (childish) cop-out. It could be about how he acquired the name of 'the Doctor' only I fear it's not. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see.

I thought they explained that his name is Doctor -- and that's how the word entered our language.

I thought the name of the Doctor was established long ago (in Tom Baker era) as Theta Sigma in the "The Armageddon Factor".

Canon has it that the name was a nickname in that episode, referring to the academy.

Ah, an interesting choice to use the word "canon" in your statement. But as with most things, I prefer to make my own judgement based on observation when possible. Fortunately for us, the Time Lords decided to make backups of the Doctor's Matrix entries after the mischief caused by the Valeyard. ;) One of these backups is accessible via the Terran Internet starting at relative time reference 09:32 of this entry and continued with this entry. As can be observed, at first Drax uses the nickname Thete and then the full-name Theta Sigma. I shall leave it to other observers to formulate their own opinions, but it would seem strange that one would create a nickname for a nickname. And yes, I spent way to much time preparing this response. It was worth it though to re-watch that particular episode. I always enjoy watching the Tom Baker episodes. I still think that the best stories where from the Jon Pertwee era. ;) On that note, was I the only one to find the pronunciation of Metebelis Three in the "Hide" episode to be grating to the ears?

No, the pronunciation grated on my ears as well. The frightening thing is that episode was from long before Matt Smith was born.

It's well known that if all the cat videos and porn disappeared from the internet there would be only one site left and it would be called whereareallthecatvideosandporn.com
