I just got my first iPad today. I code in Microsoft Visual Studio, use Microsoft SQL Server, own a Microsoft Windows Phone, have Microsoft Windows Server on my server, and run Microsoft Windows on my PC's and laptops. So getting an iPad is a whole new experience for me. I want to write apps. I'm a C# guy. What are the tools I need to write apps for my shiny new iPad? Thanks

If it's not broken, fix it until it is

You need a Mac if you want to write native for iFads.

You really need a Mac. XCode (the mac equiv. of VS) is free. And you need to pay about $100 per annum to Apple to actually run the software on your device, but you can run on the included simulator for nothing.

I saw an ad for a C# developer the other day. The company provides you your very own MacBook. Underneath it, it said you can only install Microsoft software, if you really must.

I have 11 ios apps in the store using MonoTouch. Definately good for a C# person.

That's awesome! I seriously considered Xamarin for Android for a couple of years, before deciding to go native (i.e. Java).  I'm not a fan of Eclipse, but Xamarin Studio threw me off and the price of the software is out of my budget.  I'm hoping the new Android Studio will evolve into a stable and easy-to-use IDE. /ravi
