My favorite was someone who said I need to have at least 5 years experience working with Linus. I wanted to respond by asking if they were referring to Linus the Peanuts character??

That's just because you didn't play along with the joke... :-\
The United States invariably does the right thing, after having exhausted every other alternative. -Winston Churchill America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. -Oscar Wilde Wow, even the French showed a little more spine than that before they got their sh*t pushed in.[^] -Colin Mullikin

Based on an earlier post about job hunting... I know that we all hate recruiters but I think it's really that we hate the bad recruiters. I have a few that I have worked with over the years that I trust a lot. In fact when I hear about job openings I call and let them know about a sales prospect. Wondering what others thought about it/them??

The ones who won't tell you who the client is but still want to submit your resume/cv. "But supposing I have a reason that I don't want to work for that company? If you don't tell me who they are, I can't let you submit my resume/cv!" "Oh no, it's a secret!" Bollocks is it a secret: they just think you'll go direct. Avoid those recruiters like a corona virus.

I don't hate recruiters. I find that even the bad ones (except for CyberCoders) have a lot of useful information and can get you good leads. Over time, I've learned who the reputable ones are and what the specialize in. Even then I get surprised--we just hired a contractor through Robert Half. Because I'm nice to recruiters, they tend to email me postings in case I know someone. It takes little effort on my part to go through the few I get, but I learn who's hiring, where salaries are going, what skills are popular, etc..

I have the experience working with Linus but no experience with Linus himself. :-D wequiring experience as working with an individual is something I have never seen before. that would be interesting requirement.

As with any other group there are winners and losers. My current recruiter is cool because he mostly leaves me alone. 3-4 times a year he'll buy lunch to make sure things are still going well. And on the anniversary of employment each year I tell him to get me a raise, and he does. The recruiter I used before that was a disaster. I finally had to tell him he was an unscrupulous asshole and never to call again. Then his boss called, and I yelled at him too.

I work for a well know mutual society in the UK who have recently had some significant issues around profit, banking and the accompanying bad press. Nice company, but technologically unaware; if you feel you need to restructure your IT, that's reasonable, however you cannot just stand still while you do that, (currently a little over a year and counting), as that's as good as going backwards! Anywho... have been checking the market recently and there does seem a fair mix. Three or four of the people I've dealt with have been excellent, listened to where I am, what I'm looking for in terms of role and location and to be fair have been offering up some realy good potential matches and roles. Then there's a bunch who are just firing almost anything at me; no, I live in Manchester and I don't want to work in London/Leeds/Luton. I'm a dev, I am not looking for a management/testing role. Thirdly there are those asshats that don't even seem to have anything to offer but just want to suck time out of my life. It does seem that it's pretty hectic at the moment, that there's a lack of perm .net dev's with long term experience and people are hiring so I've definitely appreciated the few good people I have dealt with which has let me tell the others to leave me alone and if I see anything interesting then I'll contact them.

You'd be surprised. I had one agent phone me about a device driver development job. He obviously didn't know what I/O was so he asked me if I had used the Eye Slash Oh application product. :wtf:
