Now that we have more Democrats running for office than voting, Gephardt has decided to throw his hat into the ring. I wonder if happened to win, if he would then be able to PAY OFF his student loans or maybe he took them out on multi-generational terms :) There was a cartoon in our local paper of a meeting of Democrats with the caption “If anyone here is not running for President, please raise your hand”. Well from this side of the pond (UK) the US political system looks like an even worse mess than our own (and that's saying something). Both major parties come across as corrupt and incompetent, and the whole system's governed by who can afford to spend the most. Not good. Well from this side of the pond (UK) the US political system looks like an even worse mess than our own (and that's saying something). Both major parties come across as corrupt and incompetent, and the whole system's governed by who can afford to spend the most. Not good. The money part is a common misconception. Down here in Georgia, we kicked out our governor even though he outspent the new governor 4 to 1. But of course, it would be silly to believe that money doesn't play a HUGE part. But establishing a cause/effect relationship might be hard. After all, "if" every person who voted for a candidate also gave that candidate 1 dollar during the campaign, then the person who won would also have had the most money. Did they have money because they were popular or were they popular because of the money. Of course, that in itself is a gross over simplification, but it does highlight the crux of the problem with trying to decide which came first. As far as both parties being corrupt, no argument there. Each has their own groups they "owe" political allegiance. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Good for you! What I was alluding to in the money bit was mostly the ludicrous amount spent by candidates on campaign publicity. I've occasionally wondered how things might change in the US if the amount of airtime and so on the parties had was regulated as strictly as it is in the UK. Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

People tend to be partial to what they grew up with. When I hear about some of the political systems around the world, I wonder what brain dead moron came up with it. I'm not jumping to that conclusion myself. To be honest I know little abut the US political system so I'm just commenting on what people seem to be saying about it... it's mainly US citizens too. I know. Things changed somewhat here in 1981 when the 2nd Largest party fractured into two. The new party (SDP) allied with the 3rd party (Liberal) and the two eventually formed the Democrats (very different to your own party of the same name) and until the Falklands War looked likely to beat the Conservatives in the next election (Thatcher was hugely unpopular at the time). Although Labour and Conservative are the largest parties in Parliament, the Democrats mount a pretty effective opposition in many ways, and run a significant proportion of local government. Having a 3 party system also means protest votes tend to be rather effective at times! Personally, I despise the party system and the confrontation it breeds (I'm a consensus politics person!) but sadly that's unlikely anywhere for a long, long time. :( Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk
