No, I think that's the marketing/sales people you're thinking about.

Yes, I did. He's abrasive, he fails to read\understand topics, and makes ridiculous suggestions that generally have nothing to do with any sort of actual solution. But, he had little to do with this topic, he's a minor fraction of the problem.
First of all, this has absolutely nothing to do with language. English-speaking people could be jerks as well, and the opinion I'm about to express here isn't specific to any group. This is directed at no individual, but a lot of *experts* have appeared out of nowhere who have presumed to have expertise on everything, and will answer queries on any topic with some vague text and a couple of links to other sites. They'll keep doing it until their name is listed as a "top expert", and they accumulate the online points they've been aiming to get. I suggest that you don't get into an argument with any of them. It won't be fruitful, and it will frankly be a complete waste of your time.

I got really, really pissed off once with a non English speaker who accused me of using the wrong word in something irreverent. Even after others said the word I had used was correct, if a little obscure in the way I had used it, he still insisted I had used the wrong word just because he had never used it like that.

For the benefit of others reading this forum I'm that "non-English speaker". After that discussion with Chris, I did some looking up, and learnt that he was indeed correct in the usage of his language (albeit a little obscure as he said). :)

Sigh, you guys win. It's my fault, I should have learned broken English and avoided these problems. What am I supposed to say? You're taking my words out of context, and you're applying meaning that was never there. I can't even get people who speak English to understand me, and then you WONDER why I get frustrated with people who can barely speak it to begin with under the same\similar conditions?
Joe, there are millions of people here and you should seriously not expect many of them to have similar opinions (let alone the same). You got into an experience that wasn't very pleasant to you. But you're not here for pleasant experiences alone. You'll meet all kinds of people, and just remember that on some occasions, you could be the reason why someone had an unpleasant experience here (you won't even know it). But none of that matters. You come here and you're doing your part to help people with technical queries, and that's wonderful. If I may take the liberty of suggesting you something, I'm going to say that you just carry on with answering questions and nothing else matters. As much disturbing as these online experiences can be, they're of no value to anyone and you don't have to think too much about such incidents. You have a good day, alright? :)

Explain how I was being arrogant? I'm 100% serious, you've simply misunderstood something that I've said. (Perhaps it's more of this wonderful humor I keep hearing about on these forums. ?) In any case, I get the feeling you think I'm insulting foreigners, but, that's just not the case, my family is from England\Ireland, my roots, I mean, I was born in America, and I have friends of all races, and colors, sexual preferences, you name it. I'm the most accepting guy you'll ever meet. This topic, for THE MILLIONTH time, is about answering a very simple question: When a foreigner, SHOWS CLEAR SIGNS of not 'truly' understanding English during a debate\argument\conversation\etc, what should I do?
Joe_Dert wrote:

Your whole attitude; your assertion that people who do not speak perfect English, somehow have no right to argue with you.
Joe_Dert wrote:

That is really funny. Just about everything you have posted in this thread makes it clear that you are the exact opposite.
Joe_Dert wrote:

Simple, instead of acting like a jerk, try explaining the bits they need help with. And stop treating such people as if they are somehow inferior to you, or your race.

One of the biggest issues I've had on this site, and others, is with people who don't natively speak English. Some of them are very nice, and cool people. However, some of them, like to argue with you, despite barely being able to understand you. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind foreigners, however, I do mind the people in question, the ones who will blindly attack me, when in reality, it's their own fault. To clarify, I wouldn't go to a Japanese forum, and argue with people in Japanese, because, I don't properly understand the language, and a debate of any kind requires understanding. (As do conversations in general.) Do, you see where I'm coming from? I just don't understand the logic of these people, are they just stupid, international trolls, I don't know. ? I would almost suggest they stick to forums that cater to their own language, at least until they get a better grip on the English language, and can have rational conversations. And okay, let's say they do come to an English speaking forum, and haven't quite mastered the language, well, perhaps they should avoid debates until they can understand what's going on a bit better. Am I wrong here? Should I be more patient? Should I ignore them when they act up? I've been arguing with them, but it seems to go nowhere, but, if you do nothing, then, they're not going to learn, or stop. (Can I report this behavior?) What do you guys think?

And okay, let's say they do come to an English speaking forum, and haven't quite mastered the language, well, perhaps they should avoid debates until they can understand what's going on a bit better.Isn't it too much? I'm not a native English speaker, I'm from Catalonia and speak Catalan (my native language), Spanish (I'm bilingual so I speak it as if it were native) and a little bit of English. Posting here (questions, articles, tips & tricks...) has helped me in a lot of different ways: I've learned better ways to program and also I've improved my English (which is still far from being perfect). I guess there is stupid people (trolls, ...) everywhere, in all different languages, I would become upset with :bob: if he would prevent me to post or to participate just because my English is not my best. And in the other hand, preventing me to post or to participate would also be a big loss for :bob:: I've posted a good (see the score) article time ago and during some time I was posting the best jokes in the soapbox  (well, probably not the best ones so excuse me for that ;P ). This is an open community, and it should continue being in that way. Typically the problems that arise from trolls are solved by downvoting and sending them to the oblivion. Of course, if the chosen option would be to avoid foreigners to debate, then you would have not seen this marvellous post with some smilies. With love from Catalonia and from a non English speaker. PS: There is plenty of humour in that post, the only interesting thing here should be the fact that I don't agree any method that would imply to prevent foreigners to debate. If anyone here makes wrong things there are voting methods to solve that. I still remember of a lot of in-"famous" members here that have needed to be thrown away by voting because they were affecting the CP community in a wrong way. And some of them were perfect English speakers.

I am French, and work in Germany. What you express here is, in my experience, the very same mindset as in France : "first, know your language, then only you are welcome to argument". In Germany, people would listen to you even if you were speaking in URGGGzz ( this is a placeholder, in case it was not clear). And that is one of the many reasons why I enjoy to work here : the language does not matter, only the ideas. This open-minded way to interact with foreigners speeds up the integration. When your arguments are wrong because you did not catch something due to the lack of language knowledge, they will reexplain until they understand. This does not avoid some assholes to behave as you describe, e.g. go into arguments and try to explain you why they are right even if they do not understand you, but it does not happen very often. Precisely because of the patience the Germans show first place. Agreed, differences are that the situations I have described take place face to face, and in business environment ( where you just cannot tell people or colleagues to fuck off like you would on the internet). But, to come to a conclusion, I would recommend to show more patience - give them a chance to express their ideas, and to ignore the obvious trolls.

I was just explaining my nature, it was brought up, and I clarified. I've long held, that people need not fear me to get their a** kicked by me. And I've also long held another belief, even if you manage to win, I'm coming back with a bat, and if that isn't enough, I'm coming back with a knife, etc, etc,. You've seen how relentless I am, that holds true in life as well, you'd have to kill me to stop me, or cripple me so bad I can't possibly get you. (Or do what everyone else does, and don't be dumb enough to make me that mad.) These are just a simple fact about myself, nothing more. --- Look, FWIW, I grew up poor, lived on the streets, we was homeless, I had nothing, etc,. (And worse, things I can't even speak of.) Life was rough, but, it made me something not to be trifled with. I'm a decent guy, I try to be intelligent, and civil, but, just as much as that's true, so is everything else that I've said.

I don't appreciate you stalking me, reading one topic, and assuming that you have all the facts. (I'd crossed paths with one of the involved member on a few occasions, and had told him to never talk to me again. I assume the other is an ALT account for another member I had issues with.) Why don't you go read me and stefan_langs conversations, we fought a bit, but we've also had GREAT conversations, all of it was based on his choice of words when speaking to me. I don't just attack people, they earned it, in some way or another, and it's not your place to play judge, especially when you lack all of the facts.
-
No fluent English speaker would accuse you of stealing code, after you straight up, and directly explained that you wrote the f*cking code. (Unless they had VERY good reasons to be doing so, or were trolls, etc,.) Anyways, you shouldn't be discussing anyone's language comprehension skills, as you seem to have issues with it yourself....
Joe_Dert wrote:

That is nonsense - I have seen exactly that occur.
Joe_Dert wrote:

That of course is a personal attack. And since no context was given I will presume nothing more than that you did not understand what I wrote.
-
If it makes you feel better, go on, point your finger at me, and say, that's him, that's the bad guy... In reality, he snapped over something, no fluent English speaker would have even cared about.
Joe_Dert wrote:

What would make me feel better would be to see an example thread which would then allow me to evaluate that - rather your reflection on it.
Joe_Dert wrote:

Perhaps you need to get out more. With a posting history in different forums of well over 100,000 and with perhaps close to two decades of actively viewing forums I can assure you that English speakers have no problem finding offense.

Joe_Dert wrote:

Pot - kettle. This thread that you started was specifically about you judging other people.
It's not a judgment!!!! You can't have a proper debate, if you can't understand each other. Besides, I simply asked how I should deal with the situation. I mean, if I start debating you, and it becomes clear that my points aren't being understood, I have to examine what's happening. If it seems you're just an idiot, or pig headed, then, I know what to do, flame you until I get bored, and move on. However, if I start to suspect that person just doesn't understand English well enough, then, I'm forced to examine things yet again. On one hand, they're trying to speak the language, they're trying to debate, and it seems quite rude to just write them off. Then again, I don't want to tear into them the same way I would someone who actually speaks the language. (For many reasons, it's easy pickings, it leaves a bad impression about Americans, etc, etc,.) So, that's my question, what do I do when I reach this point. This isn't hate, it's not judgement, it's just a simple f*cking question of proper etiquette! Stop being stupid twats about this, mmmkay? Maybe we've hit that language barrier again, let me try this approach: You're being a bunch of f*cking wankers. :P

I think you need to reexamine the situation. I wrote a serious post, posed serious question, and was seeking serious advice. (END OF STORY!) If you want to claim that I'm a troll because I asked a TOUGH question, then, you're a moron. I'm sorry, but sometimes you have to discuss tough issues, it happens, deal with it. If my question seemed inflammatory to you, again, that's your fault, you're "projecting", I had no ill intentions, whatsoever. (Quite the opposite, actually, to me, it's a question of proper etiquette, and nothing more.)
