It's clanging!!

It - that's my car. It's now about 8 months old and since perhaps 3 months it doesn't stop rattling. Where? Seems to be around my right back-wheel. What is it? NOBODY knows. :(( My car spent about 2/3 of the last month in the garage. Got some new parts, has been driven by many people on good and bad streets and everytime I picked it up it's been well-cleaned. But the noise remains. And that makes me really cheerless.:( Anybody out there undergoing a comparable bad situation??

Look in your trunk, what side of the vehicle is the spare tire. If its on the right side, make sure that they jack and the spare tire are mounted securely. I had a friend that had the same kind of noise in his Maxima, took it to the shop and all that, couldn't find the problem, then one day he checked his spare (don't remember why) and the jack was loose so at some points it would shake loose and start rattling until it got wedged and stopped. If its bearings, they make a whine when they start to go out and if its tire imbalance you would feel some shaking in the car. Another solution, is to have a friend follow you and watch the right rear tire, watch for a wobble in the tire, if it doesn't do this then the wheel/tire is fine and is not out of balance.

Schlaubi wrote: because the noise remains even when taking out the tire Not the tire, the jack. Not sure what kind of car you have but in a lot of cars the jack is either behind the spare, or under the spare held in place by some bracket. If you've taken out the spare, did you take out the jack? If not, try it again with both removed and see if the sound goes away. Good luck in trying to track this down. Just don't do what some guy in the US did, he hung himself under the car while his friend drove the truck to try to isolate where a noise was coming from. He got caught on the drive shaft and when his friend stopped he was a bloody mass. :omg:

I read tire:wtf: ... but doesn't matter because the jack is places "inside" the tire. If it makes you feel any better, a friend in Durban sent me this email yesterday: (Rhonda is her car's name) "... have been stuck in a bit of a mare lately hit a tree with rhonda about 3 weeks ago that was the start after that the clutch burnt out, release fork snapped, and pressure plate crumbled but that was not the end of it directly after picking rhonda up from the mechanic got hit in the rear by a toyota corolla ... " Schlaubi wrote: Where? Seems to be around my right back-wheel. Happened to me on my old Beetle once - the brakes had literally come apart inside the one back wheel! Hope that's not your problem... :rose: BTW - if it's only 8 months old, can't you take it back under guarentee or something?

More serious answer... Lauren mentioned CV joints, but I doubt that is the case. Any mechanic, even a total waste-of-a-wrench mechanic, would pickup a CV joint problem, it is easy to spot. As mentioned other possibles: - Wheel balance - Bearing problem - Something loose in the boot (check that spare wheel! don't laugh, do it) - Something in the door (some makes are known to have poor window winders which snap and then rattle around in the door, annoying) If you haven't already then take it to the people who made the car. It will be more expensive, but if anybody they are the best able to figure it out. If you have done that... then it most likely is something very minor. Anything serious would have been spotted. A loose nut in the body that a mechanic left behind. A portion of the bumper not bolted on tightly enough. Something in the actual tyre (heard of cases where the valve has fall into the tyre. They put in a new valve but don't get the old one out. Drives the driver nuts.) Also remember where you hear the sound coming from is not neccesarily where the sound is being produced. I had something rattling around in my engine bay. It sounded like it was coming from the back seats. Good luck.

I thought my shocks were broken or something, from the rattling. Then I checked the trunk, and my snowshoes were touching the metal side of the trunk:rolleyes:
