The girl was right and the Supermarket so very, very wrong. I hate it when someone's on their mobile and trying to talk to you at the same time. Sorry bitcha, put down the beepythang and make eye-contact or you can FRO. [edit] On the Torygraph[^] report they have a survey - nearly 90% agree the skank should not be served. The other 10% think she should just be shot.

Some shops here block the mobile phone access, others not (of course the ones selling them) Did you ever go to Italy by train? You get mad of the mobiles.. I personaly have two of them, but only use them where I don't disturb.

we have quiet train carriages here in sunny Queensland - do they have these elsewhere's'ville? EDIT - I mean like they have like quiet stickers on them, like, so you're not meant to talk on your phone, like, in them

Hard to say. The woman on the phone claims "I ended my call swiftly and said to the lady on the checkout 'Apologies." It is possible it was an important call and she did wrap it up quickly. And, how is this any different than if you are in line with your friend and you are talking to them? I doubt the girl would have refused service in that case. I don't disagree with you. It sounds like it may have been an overreaction on the part of the girl. Of course, we don't have the full story so who knows. I think in general old fashioned manners are hard to find. What I hate worse is when the checkout person is talking on the phone when I go to checkout and it's clear they are talking to their friend. If I were an employer I would ban cell phone use. :)

I don't think you'd get a checkout person on the phone in the UK, certainly not in any chain shops. My wife works on the checkout of a national frozen food shop and she isn't allowed a mobile at all whilst at the checkout.

We have them too, not sure many people take any notice of them though.

Yes, in Switzerland we do. In Italy it's useless, nobody follows any rule. BTW, I went once to Queensland, stayed in Cairns and had so much rain you can't believe it. Were 17 hours flight, with stop in Singapore, that was long.. Very nice, Australia, so.

This story on the BBC[^] of a checkout girl who refused to serve a woman who was on the phone. The supermarket involved has apologised. Is it just me who thinks good on the girl for refusing to serve the rude and ignorant customer until they actually paid attention to her rather than whoever they were on the phone to?

I saw a sign above the counter of a shop the other day(can't remember where) but it said something along the lines of... 'We realise your telephone call is important to you, so we will not disturb you by serving you until you have finished your call' Summed it up quite nicely I thought.

I disagree. Certainly, it's pretty rude, but in order to complete the transaction you don't need to pay attention to the checkout lady. So why demand it? To get petty revenge on someone who was on the phone with someone more important than you? Out of jealousy because you're not as important as the person they're on the phone with? Sorry, checkout lady, but almost everyone is more important than you.

What I did was a roundtrip from Perth - Ayers Rock (Uluru) - Cairns by Plane, and then Great Barrier Reef, and the took a Greyhound Pionneer bus down to Sidney. Yes, the rainforest was quite an experience, I remember Kurranda.

It doesn't stop them talking to their friends on the other checkouts, though. I've been through a checkout at a large supermarket with a trolley-load of shopping without the operator saying a single word to me - not even to tell me the total or ask for the money - because she was too busy nattering to her mate. But I also find it annoying when they go to the other extreme, and try to force a conversation. I came in here to shop, not to discuss my day with a complete stranger!

They try that with me they don't get paid, or any sort of activity from me. I've walked out and left my shopping all over the conveyer belt or waiting to be bagged a couple of times because of the actions of the checkout staff.

I once held a conversation with a woman on a cellphone for 2 minutes. Trouble was she didn't know I was talking to her and I didn't know she wasn't talking to me 'til she turned and I saw the Bluetooth earpiece. It reminded me of a few meetings I've been to, where you are talking but nobody knows it...

It was broke, so I fixed it.

Like the old joke; I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the next toilet saying: 'Hi, how are you?' I'm not the type to start a conversation in the restroom but I don't know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed, 'I am Doing' just fine!' And the other person says: 'So what are you up to?' What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too bizarre so I say: 'Uhhh, I'm like you, nature dictates!' At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can, but nature hadn't let go as yet, when I hear another question. 'Can I come over?' Gosh Whaaaat!, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I say ... 'No...... you know I am busy right now, I guess you are busy too!!!' Then I hear the person say nervously...... ...... 'Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the next toilet who keeps answering all my questions.'

So you think it's polite to expect to be served when you don't even have the courtesy to pay attention to what the cashier is doing? I have a lot more time, and respect, for anyone who is polite rather than rude.

I think the supermarket made a bad decision. They are worried about that one customer being upset and not paying attention to the dozens of customers in line behind the cellphone using nitwit.

That does shed a better light on the customer, but the full quote, from the BBC article, reads:

"Apologies, I didn't realise that it was Sainsbury's policy that you are unable to use your phone at the checkout'.

Is it just me or does this have more a sarcastic tone than sincere apology? I can't tell from the transcript. Either way, I think the checkout operator is quite right to wait for the customer to finish their call.

Good for the girl who refused the IB on the phone service.

Clearly not just you. A lot of people seem to side with the checkout lady. Of course none of us were there so none of us really know what happened.

Nah, that's some seriously poor form on the part of the register monkey. Sure, if it was her shop or if the supermarket had a clear policy on the matter, I'd support her. But this is just quite simply not her decision to make. She's representing her employer while on the job, so she needs to act accordingly. Now if, on the other hand she was enforcing store policy, I'd probably agree. But it's just petty and makes the other customers wait longer. I suffer asperger's, and at times can find the thought of even a 30sec wait at the register with the need to say something daunting - I put off getting essentials sometimes for a day or two(too bad the idea of written interactions is ludicrous). So, when I go somewhere and the register operator is talking on the phone and basically ignores me, I actually think it's fantastic. :jig: Too bad one cant buy cigarettes or petrol at self-serve checkouts...
