    This story on the BBC[^] of a checkout girl who refused to serve a woman who was on the phone. The supermarket involved has apologised. Is it just me who thinks good on the girl for refusing to serve the rude and ignorant customer until they actually paid attention to her rather than whoever they were on the phone to?

    I once held a conversation with a woman on a cellphone for 2 minutes. Trouble was she didn't know I was talking to her and I didn't know she wasn't talking to me 'til she turned and I saw the Bluetooth earpiece. It reminded me of a few meetings I've been to, where you are talking but nobody knows it... :doh:

    It was broke, so I fixed it.

      Like the old joke; I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the next toilet saying: 'Hi, how are you?' I'm not the type to start a conversation in the restroom but I don't know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed, 'I am Doing' just fine!' And the other person says: 'So what are you up to?' What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too bizarre so I say: 'Uhhh, I'm like you, nature dictates!' At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can, but nature hadn't let go as yet, when I hear another question. 'Can I come over?' Gosh Whaaaat!, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I say ... 'No...... you know I am busy right now, I guess you are busy too!!!' Then I hear the person say nervously...... ...... 'Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the next toilet who keeps answering all my questions.'

        :laugh: The woman did give me the "what elephant is wrong with you?" look when she realized I was answering her questions. :-O

          I disagree. Certainly, it's pretty rude, but in order to complete the transaction you don't need to pay attention to the checkout lady. So why demand it? To get petty revenge on someone who was on the phone with someone more important than you? Out of jealousy because you're not as important as the person they're on the phone with? Sorry, checkout lady, but almost everyone is more important than you.

          So you think it's polite to expect to be served when you don't even have the courtesy to pay attention to what the cashier is doing? I have a lot more time, and respect, for anyone who is polite rather than rude.

            I think the supermarket made a bad decision. They are worried about that one customer being upset and not paying attention to the dozens of customers in line behind the cellphone using nitwit.

              Hard to say. The woman on the phone claims "I ended my call swiftly and said to the lady on the checkout 'Apologies." It is possible it was an important call and she did wrap it up quickly. And, how is this any different than if you are in line with your friend and you are talking to them? I doubt the girl would have refused service in that case. I don't disagree with you. It sounds like it may have been an overreaction on the part of the girl. Of course, we don't have the full story so who knows. I think in general old fashioned manners are hard to find. What I hate worse is when the checkout person is talking on the phone when I go to checkout and it's clear they are talking to their friend. If I were an employer I would ban cell phone use. :)

                  Clearly not just you. A lot of people seem to side with the checkout lady. Of course none of us were there so none of us really know what happened.

                    Nah, that's some seriously poor form on the part of the register monkey. Sure, if it was her shop or if the supermarket had a clear policy on the matter, I'd support her. But this is just quite simply not her decision to make. She's representing her employer while on the job, so she needs to act accordingly. Now if, on the other hand she was enforcing store policy, I'd probably agree. But it's just petty and makes the other customers wait longer. I suffer asperger's, and at times can find the thought of even a 30sec wait at the register with the need to say something daunting - I put off getting essentials sometimes for a day or two(too bad the idea of written interactions is ludicrous). So, when I go somewhere and the register operator is talking on the phone and basically ignores me, I actually think it's fantastic. :jig: Too bad one cant buy cigarettes or petrol at self-serve checkouts...

                          You can get the petrol with self-serve checkout in the UK, no longer cigarettes though.

                            Damn! We used to have pay at the pump with Mobil, but 7-11 ate them up here. The other mob are attached to a supermarket loyalty scheme thing (no standard cards - theirs only), so that's just not going to happen. I've gone to pubs for no other reason than to buy them from the machine at 25% extra, just to avoid the interaction. :sigh:

                                  How very sad that you take pride in being obnoxious. I used to work for a rather large Dutch bank, and though a lot of the cloggies where forthright and often abrupt, I would not go as far as to say the underlying trait was rudeness.

                                    I no longer buy cigarettes, but I think all machines have now been removed from pubs, they are not allowed to be seen from shop floors anymore, if you want some you have to go and be sneered at by someone for being disgusting.

                                      I agree with you, it's certainly rude to some point, but all you need to do is unload your items, pay up, pickup the bags and get the heck outta there.

                                        He's agreeing that it's rude. Nevertheless, it's not the checkout person's job to teach manners, specially not paying customers.

                                          For every time the girl or boy at the register at the supermarket was too busy to address me because they were flirting with the bag-boy I would be a rich man. When I go to a store I am paying to be accommodated. That said, I always hang up my phone when it is my turn.
