Never hurts to be prepared. if you learn it and don't need it it's just good exercise but if you need it it's invaluable training.

Indeed, but I last did any serious martial arts 25 years ago. So, I suspect "never hurts" should actually be "I'm going to hurt a lot".

I was brought up to respect my elders. I don't respect many people nowadays.

Have fun. It looks a lot like the Kung Foo San Soo[^] classes I took in my late 20's, the idea being of course to kill your opponent, none of that whimpy punch-block-block karate crap. :-D Marc

I think it's standard training for the Israeli secret service. (and some other security services around the world) Something I'd like to do, but my current lifestyle has to go.

Having looked at that clip, all I can say is "it's been nice knowing you Pete - do you have a next of kin to send your rep points to?"

I reckon this is what Graham's after inviting me along. It's a quick way for him to gain a CP rep. Of course, I could always just use Jedi powers on my opponents. "This is not the person to beat up you're looking for..."

Brrrrr! Yeuch! I hate Morphine! It works. It works very well - very, very well. But it destroys my short term memory for a couple of weeks after I've had it - I act like an Alzheimer's patient, continually forgetting what I was doing, saying, even thinking. I managed to convince myself I'd forgotten English at one point because the Italian version of "Unchained Melody" came on the TV unexpectedly and I didn't understand a word...Nasty, nasty stuff.

I finally got round to starting karate after asking about the sensibilities of doing so on here last year. Had my third lesson yesterday and I'm constantly amazed at how badly my body works now. Then I realise it is about 6 or 7 years since I gave up rugby and I've done very little since. Feel like I'm going to throw a hip out doing the kicks. Enjoying it though.

Half a pint of milk would have about the same effect on me. Last time I had that much I woke up 16 hours later face down, convinced I was blind because when I opened my eyes nothing happened and not able to move for about 20 minutes. I can't remember what happened between having the milk and hitting the bed but I would have been in a similar state to what you describe for anything between a few minutes and a few hours before passing out. Oh yes, 70% cacao is about where I begin. I even have some of Wonky Willy's 100% Venezuelan Black in the cupboard :-D The milk thing is properly weird because the more processed it is the more I can have with no effect. I ate a yoghurt yesterday and suffered no ill effects at all but a pint of UHT would probably kill me. :wtf:

One of the lads has persuaded me to try out Krav Maga[^]. I have my first lesson next Monday.

Have fun with that, Pete! Yes, it's going to hurt a bit for a while, but you'll feel better than you can remember feeling in your life after about 6 months. I took up taekwondo and hapkido at 45 or so, and after the first few lessons thought I'd lost my mind - everything hurt! But when I was 54 and on the verge of collecting 3rd degree black belts in both, nothing hurt, I was stronger and more flexible than I'd ever been in my life, and there was damned little that could make me nervous. Go for it! :-D

                                      Will Rogers never met me.

Indeed, but I last did any serious martial arts 25 years ago. So, I suspect "never hurts" should actually be "I'm going to hurt a lot".

It might not be too bad. From what I understand of Krav Maga (and I may be completely wrong!) it involves using whatever is to hand as a weapon (including yourself) to quickly and permanently remove an opponent from combat. It has a strong focus on incapacitating your foe - taking out knees and eyes for example.

                                        Terry Silver said:

                                        A man can't stand, he can't fight. A man can't breathe, he can't fight. A man can't see, he can't fight.

Obviously, you can't train this 'for real' so I'd question how much pain can be delivered! (all vids I've seen seem to show very low contact).
