Hey Groovers... a friend of mine (Sonja Bernhardt OAM) is gathering some information relating to Women in IT - she has had extensive experience in this area etc etc... She has a survey running that she is after some contributions to... here's her request text and link. "Are you a Woman in Technology or used to be? Love IT/Hate IT? Ever been involved in an 'intervention project/program'? Do you have ideas about the future of women in technology? This is your invitation to respond to a quick 7 question poll." clickety[^] My comment - Thanks for your help if you feel that way inclined... feel free to repost to anyone you think might be interested!!

I have few questions. First why aren't there any questions about the attitude the girls programmers get? For example in my workplace i get the feeling that because i am a girl i don't understand a thing. I guess that the most girls in this field of work in their starting years feel the same. Second about the interventions program. My understanding about an intervention is a group of ppl telling one of their close friends/ family about an annoying/dangerous habit of his, trying to "fix" him. Can you please explain about the intervention programs more specific.

This attitude is the same of DD jokes about women driving cars: ignore the b@st#rd§. That said, in my experience, women, usually, aren't passionate about computers like men. For instance, my wife, while very good at programming, is not a computer addict like I am. This is just a (personal) statistic argument of course.

Actually, reading it properly now that is explained in the survey. It is basically anything that is specifically organised to get women interested in careers in IT.

I suggest you forward this response to your friend too - as an example of the kind of attitude that puts many women off going into technology.

and that is exactly what is wrong 'be a big girl, just ignore it' why do you suppose so many female programmers hide their gender on forums? Because if a man asks a question, it is answered, whereas if a woman asks the same identical question, jokes abound. FYI - the lounge is worse than the USAF in this respect. my 2 cents

And your perception would be that the boys just starting do in fact know everything? Or think they know everything? Or are thought to know everything? (One of those since it isn't clear to me which of those you are referring to with "girls".)

Sigh...how about because when someone makes an inappropriate comment to a male then the male should ignore it as well? Or do you propose that the male should instead punch the other person?

Utter nonsense. I have been doing this for a very long time and I have been on forums for a very long time. And there are many, many, many abusive responses to many, many, many posters. And presumably the vast majority of those are males. And I suspect that given the social ineptitude of the average male developer where most are heterosexual that on average they would be less likely to respond in a negative way to a female poster that they knew was female. But of course there are in fact people of all sorts who decide that a negative comment occurred because of 'X' when in fact no one including the respondent knew about 'X' in the first place. Where 'X' can be many things none of which has anything to do with the exchange of technical knowledge. There is one universal though in that when someone does start going off the deep end due to a perceived slight that they are in fact more likely to be received negatively at the time and in the future.

What? My dislike of smoking? You are a strange individual if you think that means anything about women in technology...

There was room in the "Other" box for additional stuff, but I shall email your questions to Sonja.
