My First Oil Change

I got told you can remove it with coke. This was when I had a car with a little oil leak and got banned from parking on anyone's drive. I asked a mechanic who was looking at a different problem if he could see where it was coming from and he replied "It's piddling out everywhere". I got through a liter of oil a week in the last few months of the car.

When I got out of the service and went home my brother had bought a car, if I remember I think Buick for $15 and it didn't have a hood. When I got in to take a ride there was a case of oil in the back seat and my brother explained to me that oil shot out of the motor onto the windshield so at every light you had to stop and wipe the oil off, I don't think wipers worked (it's been a lot of years) and every other light you had to wipe and add a quart of oil.

It is for reasons such as these that I decorate naked. It is a lot easier to wash paint off me than off clothes. I assume it is the same for oil.

I changed the oil in my Jeep because I'm one of those rugged, do-it-yourself kind of guys. There is that, and also I don't like paying $35.00 for an oil change. I decided to use synthetic oil which is more expensive. The oil alone was $35.00, plus the filter which came in at $14.00. I bought an oil pan to catch the oil that doubles as a storage unit for used oil. $20.00. I wanted to take care to use the right sized ratchet (13mm) that came in at $12.00. Toss in the pair of jeans I ruined ($35.00) and the oil soaked T-Shirt ($15.00). I'll probably let nature take care of the large oil stain in the driveway. So I got in my first oil change for $131.00 Not bad.
Cheaper to pay an oil change place huh? I learned that lesson a long time ago.

Either keep the ruined jeans or get a pair of "workwear" pants when doing stuff like that, it helps keeping the clothes cost down (talking from experience fiddling with race cars, etc). But who am I to say that, last weekend I painted a door to a cupboard at home and thoght to myself: "-Change clothes? For this? No, it's easy and I can't possible get paint all over the place..." . Well, it turns out I can get paint on a lot of places where it's not supposed to be. :doh:

Places like Jiffy Lube are going to charge more than $35 for synthetic oil anyway. I change my own oil but mainly because I don't trust the kids those oil-change places have working on my car nowadays. One time I went to Walmart (I know, bad choice in the first place) and had them change my oil because I was in the process of moving and did not have access to my tools. Everything seemed OK until I went to change my oil myself the next time. The idiot at Walmart (redundant?) had used a pair of pliers to remove my oil plug and stripped it. Are you kidding me?! And they always want to nickle-and-dime you to death with little upgrades: Want a new air filter? That's an additional $30. Want a new cabin filter? That's an additional $50, which is ridiculous considering how inexpensive and easy it is to change a cabin filter -- just Google/Bing/Whatever it to figure out how to do it yourself if you don't know how -- and for all that is holy in the universe don't ever ask a dealership to do it as that will cost you at least $75. How about a transmission fluid flush? Yeah, right -- don't fall for that one either. And that nice air freshner they want to "give" you, only $5. What a deal! Keep changing your own oil. It will be worth it. And the satisfaction of doing it yourself and doing it right, priceless. (OK, I feel better now!)

what did you climb into the engine and shoveled it out? I hope you fully drained the mineral oil before the change, a lot of these synthetic oils react badly to being mixed

Synthetic oil is the dogs bollocks, it is incredible stuff. Truly.

what did you climb into the engine and shoveled it out? I hope you fully drained the mineral oil before the change, a lot of these synthetic oils react badly to being mixed

You'd pay a lot more at a chain if you went synthetic. Changing your oil is easy. When you spill some you can get some of that cleaner to take it out. It's a liquid that soaks up the oil and turns into a sandy substance that you can sweep away. I tend to make a bit of a mess if I change the oil when it's warm. I won't let them touch my Jeep if they did it for free. They don't put trained mechanics on oil change duty. How they can screw up a job so simple is a mystery to me...

You'd pay a lot more at a chain if you went synthetic. Changing your oil is easy. When you spill some you can get some of that cleaner to take it out. It's a liquid that soaks up the oil and turns into a sandy substance that you can sweep away. I tend to make a bit of a mess if I change the oil when it's warm. I won't let them touch my Jeep if they did it for free. They don't put trained mechanics on oil change duty. How they can screw up a job so simple is a mystery to me...

I'm glad my car is still under a service plan for another ~1.5 years. Then I think I have another 6 months after that of free oil changes (which won't mean much, I've had it for 8 months and haven't hit 5k, and oil changes are only recommended every 10k...gotta love that synthetic oil).

Coke is probably not going to be very effective. It's a lot better at removing rust and tooth enamel than oil. But lye or any product based on lye (NaOH) will work, since most oils are saponified by reaction with lye and water, and become water soluble. I use EasyOff oven cleaner for driveway cleaning and it's fairly effective, but not perfect...
