I dislike AV vendors intensely and particularly McAfee

<Rant> I've owned this laptop since about October / November last year. McAfee was preinstalled and promptly got uninstalled when it arrived to be replaced by Norton since I have a subscription and it seems to have worked well for 2 or 3 years now. Much head scratching and frustration has finally allowed me to work out why the Offline Article Editor For CodeProject[^] would not work for me : McAfee (remember it's been uninstalled for 9-10 months) was preventing Java running in IE. The McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR) was required to get things back to normal. Sony: Entirely unacceptable to preinstall software that won't properly uninstall and will cause significant unwelcome behaviour issues if you do uninstall it. McAfee: Entirely unacceptable to develop such useless nonsense. </Rant>
You wait till you try and get Norton (Symantec) off it - that's even worse than McAfee... And there are full instructions on YouTube showing how to remove McAfee, from the man himself: YouTube, probably SFW[^]

Not only do they have regular services,and auto start programs they have a driver(s) tucked away in the non plug and play section of device manager. Kaspersky labs was nice enough to have a list of removal tools for other venders. http://support2.kaspersky.com/us/consumer/tools-utilities.aspx#[^] Hmm wonder where theirs is. :)

Disabling Java? I don't see any merit in doing that.

I'm starting to think I'm the only one who follows correct procedure of formatting the hard drive and installing the OS and drivers from scratch, then there is no problems such as this.

I have no doubt you are correct, but at least then it will have been my choices that got me there rather than an assembly of dim half witts at Sony and McAfee...

:) That gets done about once a year, but if the OS re-install is the one Sony provided at build time (since almost no-one provides the raw OS these days) then doing so will just re-install McAfee...
Just grab one of the legitimate ISO's from Microsoft, burn to disc and boot. Use license key from previous install/sticker/

I certainly haven't found any way of downloading it without a TechNet subscription (which I don't have). Couple that with various uncertainties as to whether the product key is embedded on the MB or if I should have it (there is no sticker anywhere or in the docs that I was sent) and I suspect I'm on a hiding to nothing. Win 8 style Factory Reset appears to be the only option. Just wish they hadn't marked the graphics card as unique to Sony, since thereby I'm not allowed to install the latest Catalyst drivers, I have to wait for Sony to update their bespoke version - which will be never... M

I normally ensure I buy a PC with a clean hard disk and installation disks - avoids all this kind of nonsense.

While Symantec is hard to get off as well, at least it finds threats. I used to use McAfee until around 2008, when one of my kids accidentally downloaded a computer virus. I was debating whether to switch or not and tested alternatives. Almost all of them, EXCEPT McAfee, discovered the virus, which put an end to dealing with them. (I believe I settled on AVG, but it quickly became extremely annoying and then abruptly stopped updating itself while displaying pop-ups constantly, freaking out my family.)
