Crying

So I get one of those tense phone calls from my daughter - the phone call where she's crying and you can hear traffic in the background - and you know she was (or is) in rush hour traffic on the way to school - and through the tears and choking sobs she lets me know that she almost hit someone. In the first 10 seconds of that call I'm thinking "she's been in a horrible accident and she's pinned inside of a burning vehicle". So I have to concentrate to not laugh out loud the rest of the call because I'm so relieved that all of this drama is over an 'almost'. *phew*
My daughter turns 16 in November and is begging us to get her temps. I am scared out of my mind. :-P

As a youth, I took this from the other side: have wrecked my car with a triple-roll (Saab 96 3cyl), I called home, schmoozed for a while, and then told them I wrecked my car. By this point, they didn't get a panic attack as I seemed alright (at least for me).

You know, I would need pictures of your rush hour. The first crash was at 5pm, rainy, and I should have known better than to let him out on the road. And, yes, it happens all the time here. In my neck of the woods well north of Atlanta, we'll lose an average of 6 teenagers / year to crashes.

temps are fine. We let ours get theirs ASAP. But they don't get the car until 18 and can afford their own insurance. This allows them to get a lot of experience. My eldest daughter still thinks her nickname is, "Stop, STOP, STOPP!!!!!!" :) caveat: some of the children have shown no interest in driving. Fine :)

I have no idea what temps are, in this context. Are they like a provisional driving license/learner's permit?

English rush hour traffic generally slows to a crawl so you really can't crash because you're not moving at all.
As it is in Atlanta. The key situation is "once the roads get full." But there is that sweet spot that results in the most carnage - roads aren't quite full allowing high speeds and there is enough congestion to catch the foolish. That and Atlanta drivers are some of the dumbest I have EVER seen. If not dumb, then rude, reckless and general a$$holes. I've seen people in very expensive cars cutting off beaters because they got po'd.

I didn't even think of having her keep her temps until she can buy her own insurance. That's ingenius. :)

Of course. :) The 17 yo soon to be 18 is going for her driving test next week. The 19 yo soon to be 20, has no real interest in driving (changing, we're getting cranky playing taxi driver). She wants a scooter, but I shudder to think of her on a scooter (think Vespa) in Atlanta.
