I can no longer read the word 'Lightbulb' without doing so in the voice of Gru from Despicable Me.

Before the lightbulb was invented (And not by Edison), how did you know when someone had a good idea?

I've moaned about this before but once again have just faced the challenge of buying a lightbulb. All I wanted was a 40W candle bulb with a small screw thread on it. Possible? Sadly not thanks to our EU friends. The 'alternative' is a halogen thing rated at 18W but which apparently throws out the equivalent of 28W (or something like that). If UKIP have a policy on returning proper lightbulbs, that's it I'm convinced, they can have my vote.

I hadn't bought a normal lightbulb for years before they were banned. The ban has, however, made the energy saving blubs considerably more expensive. I bought my house 11 years ago, and I bought energy saving bulbs for each room when I did, they were 10p each. They are just starting to need replacing, and 3 to 4 quid each now.

There weren't any LED equivalents, and I need them dimmable so I doubt that's supported anyway. I have no objection to saving energy, but the way its seems to be thrust upon us is by making us live in a darker world. LED bulbs do seem to be getting better, but surely they emit a distinct amount of very fixed wavelength light, not the broad spectrum you'd get from an incandescent bulb. A bit like fluorescent bulbs. One of those over a mirror can convince anyone they're one step away from a corpse.

          Regards, Rob Philpott.

You can get dimmable LEDs, and even in candle form: http://www.lyco.co.uk/philips-master-led-4w-candle-bulb-s-screw-dimmable.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=base&gclid=CLD53auD-rgCFa3ItAodFX8ANQ[^] - these aren't cheap, but they are probably available elsewehere, and the LED ones do last a good, long time (MTBF of LED is 50,000 hours, as opposed to energy saving bulbs at around 8000 hours, and incandescent at around 1200 hours). The light is narrower spectrum than incandescent, but if you look around there are a couple of colour types available - I use "warm white" in my office and the kitchen and they are a good, comfortable light source (if rather brighter than the halogen spots they replaced (50W -> 3W is just the power, you need to look at the light output in Lumens: mine are 420Lm @ 3000K colour temperature) The life expectancy is very good: I have old, 0.9W LED spots I still use (despite the "blue" colour) and all LEDS are still working even after 9 years! The halogens they replaced failed every year, and tripped the fuse box when they went as well... :sigh:

Why did the Greek boy leave his homeland? He didn't like the way he was being reared. Why did he return? He couldn't leave his brother's behind. And so on.

Archaeologists have found the fossils of a new species of dinosaur in Greece. They have named it Myassisaurus.

Nope (and he never made such a claim unlike Edison) Swann deveoped the vaccum process that made then last but he himself said that the basic idea had been arround for years

I don't think it was Tesla. I think there were multiple inventors who "invented" the lightbulb before. Edison was mereley the first to put the invention to some use. From todays perspective it might be that Edison just claimed to be the inventor so that he could claim patent rights on it ;P

For light compare lumems[^]. Different 40W bulbs will produce different amounts of light. That said here in the colonies we have a similar ban. Now instead of wasting energy, we are polluting with mercury and other things using the CFL[^] bulbs that do not last as long as we have been told. By the way LEDs do a good job of dimming. I just installed a spot light (yes I know you want candle) that stays dim until someone walks by when it goes to full on.
