Probably not a crime, but I think that is too bad. This letter is really no different than a person of one religion telling a person of another religion to leave the neighborhood because of that difference. It is intolerant and full of bigotry in my humble opinion.

Sorry, my language wasn't clear enough. I certainly think it should be something that should be criminal, but I'm dubious as to whether any police force would do anything about it.

Which is a crime in the UK, under the Equality Act 2010[^] The same act would (probably, I haven't checked) cover the letter as discrimination against a disabled person, or even as a "Hate Crime" against the boy and his family. Certainly, if the author lived in social housing, the council concerned would immediately evict them (if it's private or privately rented, they can't be evicted because that is also discrimination, this time against the criminals - who said the law is consistent?)

It's not a question of "Agree" or "Disagree" with a law - most of the time they are written in such complicated language that you don't stand a chance of understanding it properly unless you are a high court judge - it's more a case of the "spirit" of the law that you embrace or not. In this case, I can see what they are trying to do: stop extremists (of whatever stripe) from being able to deliberately inflame minority communities. But...it doesn't fit well with free speech... I suspect it was designed to give them a reason to lock up Abu Hamza al-Masri whenever his lawyer sprung him on another technicality... I guess I'd rather live in a society where such legislation wasn't needed. Fat Chance! :laugh:

Unfortunately stupidity by itself is not a crime. If bullying were against the law then the jails would be overflowing (which is already a problem in the US). It's incredibly insensitive but life is not fair and you need to get on with your life regardless of how stupid the people are around you. People say stupid things all the time and we can't go running to the police every time they do.

It is hateful and vile and I hope they find out who did it and that they get so many similar letters and are so reviled in their community they have to move. However, I don't think writing a letter that spews hate should be a crime. They have the freedom to speak, and we all have the freedom to speak right back. If there were a specific threat in the letter that would be a different issue.
