My boss has asked me to rewrite an application in C#. Original application is in VB6 10+ years old Was originally a DOS application given a VB6 makeover Some stats on the project from assessing the scope of the job: Processing Module A 700 lines of module variables 16.5K lines No comments Processing Module B (Very similar to Processing Module A, fortunately) 600 lines of module variables 17K lines No comments Main Form 350 lines of module variables 10K lines Main process loop: 1000 lines Some comments found - Result! Main app: Forms: 16 Modules: 4 Class Modules: 19 Support files (over 3 DLLS): Forms: 4 Modules: 10 Class Modules: 11 Time scale: One week. Elephanting interesting project X|

Just rename the output exe to [current_name]_in_C_sharp.exe, and spend the week surfing the Interwebs.

I wanna be a eunuchs developer! Pass me a bread knife!

So why are you wasting time posting here? If you don't sleep, eat, drink, or take rest breaks, you should be able to do it!

Well, you could at least have documented the modules.

Why does your boss tell you how long a project should take? He can tell you how long he'd like it to take but I see it as: 1. Customer asks Sales 2. Sales asks PM 3. PM asks senior devs/architect - initial estimates with included risk from the devs' experience. 4. PM answers Sales with %-age risk included, based on how scared the devs looked. Decision on initial team size maybe (how many available, how much can be done in parallel, available sprints). 5. Sales answers customer then bills if customer agrees. You skip devs' estimate or skip PM adding in risk, you're screwed, been there, done that. Project was on time but 30%+ over budget. Would have been more if the devs on it would have actually told the truth about the extent of their overtime.

I've done this before, it took some time because it was originally written incredibly shitty.
