    ...it's difficult to decide what to vote for: "Accept" or "Needs help". But I've just met one that gave me the same problem, but in a different direction. 1) The article is rubbish. :thumbsdown: 2) The article is spam. :thumbsdown: 3) The article is plagiarised.:thumbsdown: So what should you vote when someone has taken a badly written advert and copy'n'pasted it as his own article? :laugh: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... Triple fail!

      This would be the one case that I would agree with ridicule as an consequence. 0) The internet sees all, you will not get away with plagiarism, especially in a forum populated by pedants. 1) You need to be publicly shamed for even thinking for a moment that it is OK to do something like that. 3) In some cases it could be construed as a criminal offense.

      It was broke, so I fixed it.

                              Why is this causing you anguish, Griff? This is a no-brainer - trash it. Anyone can write a bad article- we all have off days. But to steal a bad article and claim it as one's own is a new low on the Class Act scale, and deserves only the least of accolades. Stoning would be appropriate, but I suspect that shunning is going to be our only effective recourse. Chris is still clinging to his belief that sharing the technology he's developed to selectively send crippling electric shocks to specific keys on selected users' keyboards is morally wrong. I happen to believe that sharing this technique with a few million of his closest fans and followers would do much to clean up the ether as we know it, and make it safe again for children to explore. But he's the boss; what can I hope to do to change his usually superior mind?

                                  0, 1, 3 is a perfectly acceptable counting system. The number is the decimal version of the binary value of the base 1 representation of the natural numbers. Viz: 0 [b10] = 0 [b2] ==> 0 [b1] = 0 (dec) (special case as base 1 has no representation for zero) 1 [b10] = 1 [b2] ==> 1 [b1] = 1 (dec) (fairly obvious) 3 [b10] = 11 [b2] ==> 11 [b1] = 2 (dec) 7 [b10] = 111 [b2] ==> 111 [b1] = 3 (dec) etc

                                  function decimalVersionOfBase1Number(naturalNumber)
                                  {
                                  return naturalNumber ? (1 << (naturalNumber - 1) - 1) : 0;
                                  }

                                  Or

                                  n => 2^n - 1

                                      Shredders generally produce a finer-grained result than chippers. The idea here is to reduce each piece of the spammer below growth viability. A chipper would be overkill in any case, since spammers are invertebrates and don't have an endoskeletal structure to be broken up.

                                      Who have you been talking to :suss:? Friends help you hide. Good friends help you hide bodies. Great friends don't ask why. Best friends make suggestions.

                                        Can you have their article posting privileges banned for a while? If its truly spam or plagiarized, there's no sense in letting them keep retrying until they find a moderator that accepts their efforts. If not, then can you at least flag their account for extra scrutiny by future moderators for a while?

                                        We can program with only 1's, but if all you've got are zeros, you've got nothing.

                                          I don't think any of the solutions is what should happen. There are people who do not know what plagiarism is. There are currently authors on CP who do not reference the work of others to the extent they should. Mentoring is important. If you are moderating then I would argue that you must also be mentoring. Explain the problems to the author. Let him know that as it stands the article cannot be published. If the subject treatment is too shallow, tell the author to deepen it. If you think something is plagiarized, provide the author with a link to the original. Note this requires that there actually was plagiarism. So help the author out. At least he took the time to try to supply information.
