And am annoyed. Even before looking at any features. Why would the update need to reboot TWICE?? An be careful with the prompts on the final reboot. They try to re-enable all the 'send to Microsoft...' options. And they try to get you to log in with a web account, rather than a local account - again. Pops up a logon screen that says - "please enter your email address to logon" Wasn't obvious to me how to logon to a normal local account - but a couple of bashes on the escape key got me back to the normal logon. Frustrating. New colours in Metro are even worse - the orange is just awful. Microsoft - what are you doing??

As long as the reboot worked you can consider yourself lucky[^] :-\ .

My biggest annoyance with 8.1 is that it insists on branding my desktop image with the version and build number. PLUS the text "Safe start has not been configured correctly" (translation from Swedish, so the actual English text might differ) - WITHOUT giving me the option to configure the flucking Safe start OR tell me how to do it! And Google is not helpful in removing the branding either. Doesn't seem like anybody but me cares about the text obscuring the picture of my cats!!! X|

Can't do that. I'm saving it if I should happen to come across an MS support technician IRL.

The lack of a seamless upgrade surprised and annoyed me as well. Enough so, that I won't bother upgrading my main work system. (I've actually gotten used to Windows 8 and now prefer it in several respects over Windows 7, but I simply don't see anything compelling in Windows 8.1--most every new feature MS brags about elicits a big shrug from me.)

Not really, but thank you for trying. The first link seems to be how to get INTO safe startup mode, not how to "configure it" - whatever the hell MS means by that... Please understand that I have NO IDEA whatsoever about what setting I am supposed to configure to get the bloody text to disappear! The second link, I had found before, but it doesn't seem to apply in my scenario. First of all, it's a hack that assumes that you have a static desktop image (and I have a rotating one), and second of all: There are no such files as transcoded wallpapers and cached files in my windows 8.1 folders. The tip is written for windows 8 consumer preview, so I can only assume that it has been changed, either in the official windows 8 release or somewhere in the windows 8.1 development cycle. :sigh:

I upgraded recently too and didn't think to hit ESC at that step. Definitely want to use a local account. Fortunately it sat there for awhile and eventually said it failed and so I would have to use a local account which is exactly what I wanted to do in the first place. I should have tried the ESC key though.

And what's wrong with that? It works rather nicely, lets you sync settings across devices, give you seamless access to SkyDrive, etc. I updated my Surface RT and my desktop PC yesterday. Other than the fact that it took quite a while to do (which isn't really surprising, I suppose), I didn't have any problems. I really liked Win 8 & RT, but the 8.1/8.1 RT changes really rock!

I only had to reboot once. The install took about 30 min to complete, and I had already been using my Windows Live account for login (I like the settings synchronization from my main computer to my VMs), so I just had to enter my password. I don't see much orange on the start screen or desktop. I don't store anything that I consider private on my computer (I use an encrypted external drive for that), so I don't really care about the SkyDrive thing (it is useful for school-related documents, though. Removes the need for a flash drive).

I missed that too and now have to log in with my Live account. Anybody know how to change that back?

And what's wrong with that? It works rather nicely, lets you sync settings across devices, give you seamless access to SkyDrive, etc. I updated my Surface RT and my desktop PC yesterday. Other than the fact that it took quite a while to do (which isn't really surprising, I suppose), I didn't have any problems. I really liked Win 8 & RT, but the 8.1/8.1 RT changes really rock!

So change them. That's not difficult.

I upgraded my Window 8 a few weeks ago by formatting the partition and reinstalling good old Windows 7. Now that was an upgrade!

Um... not quite sure I get what you're saying. With a Microsoft Account, I believe you can configure SkyDrive to get you access to those local resources (at least you could with the SkyDrive desktop application on Win7 and Win8 before 8.1).

I don't want to configure SkyDrive to have access to anything? I have normal everyday network shares to my various file servers, etc. that are all handled by a local (network) login, not by a web account - I don't want my private information accessed via web anything.
