In the Southern Hemisphere we generally accept that each season is 3 months long, with Spring starting on 1 September (Spring Day). If that is the case I just assumed that 1 March would be "spring day" here. Possibly spring and summer are shorter here due to poor weather patterns :(( Heinz R. I'm not really sure, but I think the meteorological spring starts on 1 March, and regarding the calender it's 21.

Boys and girls, boys and girls. Not only is it the last day of the month, the potential onset of spring and a Friday, it is also my last day of work after 10 months away from home. Tomorrow I return to my beloved in Cornwall, and also the house I bought in December. Ah sweet end of contract! How I love thee..... Jase :rose:

The seasons are deemed to start on the equinoxes, so spring doesn't actually start until the vernal equinox on March 21st. Having said that, some daffodils are in bloom in my garden, and the weather definitely has a spring-like feel to it here. Debbie

... but today is also officially the last day of winter in the northern hemisphere! :jig: Ok, ok, I know they are predicting rain for tomorrow (first day of spring), and even heavier rain for Sunday - but who cares! Spring is almost upon us, and that can only bring better days! (or is this SA totally naive? :~ ). Damn I'm looking forward to the summer :-D

but today is also officially the last day of winter Ummm... not really. You'll have a about three more weeks for the first day of spring, which is the vernal equinox, when there is exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of sunlight. This year, it occurs on March 20th. It often occurs on March 21st, which is the day my son was born. He will be 12 this year! [edit]I just realized that link was dated 2001. However, this year the vernal equinox is on the 20th also[/edit]. http://kids.msfc.nasa.gov/News/2000/News-VernalEquinox.asp[^] Marc Help! I always thought it was roughly Spring = 1 month, Summer = 5 months, Autumn = 1 month, Winter = 5 months.

The dafodils are all coming out here too, but I fear they may have been fooled. If another cold snap comes along I wonder if they will survive.

It would take a really hard frost to spoil the blooms on the daffs in my garden. I have one variety that are normally out in January, and I've never had any real problems with the weather spoiling them. Other plants aren't so hardy: I had one magnolia which looked awful if it got frosted. Debbie

Heh, I always notice spring by the start of the usual time of year daffs, and if they are too early, then crocus is the sign. :rose: Jase :rose:

I sense a gardener among us :) I am once again attempting to keep a potplant happy, not as easy as it sounds. Between my husband and I we tend to kill them with too much love. We've now had 3 cacti make it through 6 months and flourish, so last Saturday we were brave and adopted a potplant again :-O Any advice gratefully accepted...

6 more and we can offer him a  Wouldn't that be fun to actually do! [edit]meaning, actually all meet somewhere in 6 years on 3/21![/edit] I would love to know where we got the thing of 1 September then I have no idea. But I did find an interesting document. Based on Greenwich Mean Time, spring this year is on the 21st, 58 minutes into the new day. But since I was looking at a US calendar, here it would be on the 20th, -5 to -10 (if you include Hawaii) GMT. London is GMT though, so it's 3/21 for you, I guess! Timezones must drive astronomers nuts, but they probably have all the tz's of the big telescopes memorized, like bit-pushers have many hex values memorized. http://wilstar.com/holidays/seasonsbegin.txt[^] Marc Help!
