... but today is also officially the last day of winter in the northern hemisphere! :jig: Ok, ok, I know they are predicting rain for tomorrow (first day of spring), and even heavier rain for Sunday - but who cares! Spring is almost upon us, and that can only bring better days! (or is this SA totally naive? :~ ). Damn I'm looking forward to the summer :-D

but today is also officially the last day of winter Ummm... not really. You'll have a about three more weeks for the first day of spring, which is the vernal equinox, when there is exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of sunlight. This year, it occurs on March 20th. It often occurs on March 21st, which is the day my son was born. He will be 12 this year! [edit]I just realized that link was dated 2001. However, this year the vernal equinox is on the 20th also[/edit]. http://kids.msfc.nasa.gov/News/2000/News-VernalEquinox.asp[^] Marc Help! Heinz R. Vahlbruch wrote: but afaik spring starts on March, 21 ... we'll have to wait another three weeks Hmmm... wierd. In the Southern Hemisphere we generally accept that each season is 3 months long, with Spring starting on 1 September (Spring Day). If that is the case I just assumed that 1 March would be "spring day" here. Possibly spring and summer are shorter here due to poor weather patterns :(( Heinz R. Ok I must have missed that in the Southern Hemisphere Newsletter. I always thought it was roughly Spring = 1 month, Summer = 5 months, Autumn = 1 month, Winter = 5 months.

I would love to know where we got the thing of 1 September then. It went so far that at school we had a big lunch (I was at boarding school), wore civvies instead of uniform, etc, to celebrate Spring Day on 1 September. But if the equinox is generally accepted this should have all occured on 21 September!

The dafodils are all coming out here too, but I fear they may have been fooled. If another cold snap comes along I wonder if they will survive.

It would take a really hard frost to spoil the blooms on the daffs in my garden. I have one variety that are normally out in January, and I've never had any real problems with the weather spoiling them. Other plants aren't so hardy: I had one magnolia which looked awful if it got frosted. Debbie

I sense a gardener among us :) I am once again attempting to keep a potplant happy, not as easy as it sounds. Between my husband and I we tend to kill them with too much love. We've now had 3 cacti make it through 6 months and flourish, so last Saturday we were brave and adopted a potplant again :-O Any advice gratefully accepted...

6 more and we can offer him a  Wouldn't that be fun to actually do! [edit]meaning, actually all meet somewhere in 6 years on 3/21![/edit] I would love to know where we got the thing of 1 September then I have no idea. But I did find an interesting document. Based on Greenwich Mean Time, spring this year is on the 21st, 58 minutes into the new day. But since I was looking at a US calendar, here it would be on the 20th, -5 to -10 (if you include Hawaii) GMT. London is GMT though, so it's 3/21 for you, I guess! Timezones must drive astronomers nuts, but they probably have all the tz's of the big telescopes memorized, like bit-pushers have many hex values memorized. http://wilstar.com/holidays/seasonsbegin.txt[^] Marc Help! Boys and girls, boys and girls. Not only is it the last day of the month, the potential onset of spring and a Friday, it is also my last day of work after 10 months away from home. Tomorrow I return to my beloved in Cornwall, and also the house I bought in December. Ah sweet end of contract! How I love thee..... Jase :rose:

The one good thing about the UK is it's cheap to see the rest of Europe from. We still have a few places we want to go to in Europe, but I'm sure other places like Thailand would be no harder to get to from the US. Of course, me having a British passport made this the obvious place for my husband and I to start out from (less than 2 years left of living here till he has citizenship too, which will liberate us to go elsewhere). But I would love to go back and work in the US for 2 to 3 years, then possibly move on to Australia for a couple of years. After that, who knows. Don't we all dream of SA being a real possibility one day? I know Brend and I do, but how much truth the dream will hold when the time comes, I don't know.

well doing an internet bizness works from anywhere so im not impacting the us market unless its thru spending money here and creating jobs yah south africa is the ultimate place to "return" to but when i dont know ... still way too many places to see and people to meet and things to do in the big wide world before i think about hanging up my boots :)

The seasons are deemed to start on the equinoxes, so spring doesn't actually start until the vernal equinox on March 21st. Having said that, some daffodils are in bloom in my garden, and the weather definitely has a spring-like feel to it here. Debbie

My daffodils are daft - they come up in December, having no idea what time of year it is. Although Winter begins 12/21 and lasts until the vernal equinox on 3/21, we got our first winter weather last week. Prior to that it's been 20 - 25C all winter long. Rough weather, eh?:-D It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.
